Clydesdale / Athena Registration Rules (Read 176 times)

So, let me get this straight. The 24 year old "sometimes" crosses before you and had "beaten" you twice. Sounds to me like "always" crosses before you. Now, you have been given a few minutes of time to "make up" for the age difference and all of sudden you  are " SMOKING" him it just doesn't make any sense to me. The kid is beating you hands down every time you race together, but since you are a little older, you are given a few extra minutes. I don't get it, prolly never will. I'm sure there are older and younger people that can beat me at running, I only run for fun. I haven't ran a race yet, and when I do run a race, it's going to be for me. So I can say, hmm I've done one of those and it was fun and exciting. No need knocking big girls HenryC,  it's what's on the inside that counts, and besides there are PLENTY of big girls in Texas, if that's where you are from.

Glad you could figure out that he is beating me hands down every time we race together from my comment.

We've actually only raced the same race together 3 times that I can remember because he almost always runs the shortest race and I usually run the longer races.

Here's the official results from those 3 races.

I just posted the top 2 each time, but you can see that I've actually beaten him straight up by 27 seconds once, he has beaten me by 1 second and by 24 seconds. That's based on Actual time.

They then age grade the time and using that I beat him easily (smoked him) each time based on the age graded result.  That's not my goal, I want to beat him on the actual time, and I have in the past, but this last race I just didn't have it and the one that I lost by 1 second I got cut off right at the finish line by another runner.

I'll be curious next time I decide to run the shorter distance if I will beat him or not, we are actually very closely matched on the short races.  I can smoke him straight up on the longer races though, I think the longest race he has run is the 4 miler because they don't offer a shorter distance on that race.

I don't make the rules on the age graded stuff, but it does make some sense that someone that is 20 years younger than you should be able to run faster.  I just want to beat everyone straight up in the fat boy division, I just can't do it every time.

That's why I'm training.  To get faster!

Those are some girly-fat times for a 24 year old dude.

I don't get it, prolly never will. I'm sure there are older and younger people that can beat me at running, I only run for fun. I haven't ran a race yet, and when I do run a race, it's going to be for me.

You've just described why I stopped doing races.  I can run a half marathon any time I want.  I can set down my water bottle on an out-and-back or pass by a drinking fountain and call it an aid station.  I can use a watch and have official timing.  I can run on my trail that has mile markers set with a wheel by the local running club and have a "certified distance".  I can listen to live music and pretend the cheering at the end of each song is for me.  I then save $40.

You've just described why I stopped socializing. I can go to a party any time I want. I can set down a 6 pak of beer on my table and call it a kegger. I can use a blow up doll and have a date. I can hang in my basement that has an old couch and a toilet and call it a "party atmosphere". I can watch reruns of Cheers and pretend me and Norm are getting slammed together. I then save having to put on pants.

I don't really see the socialism element from a race.  I can go on a long run with someone at about the same fitness as me and have some good conversation.  In a race I'm just trudging along as people I'll never meet yell "you can do it".

I wasn't trying to be a prick.  I just mean that when we start worrying about who competes fairly with who and who wins what division it bores me.  We all know a guy weighing 140 pounds and running the same miles as me will kick my ass.  So who needs a race to prove it?  And who needs a division to try and divvy us all up to feel better?  Just run whatever you feel like doing.  And stay home to save 40 bucks and run with your friends some time.

Way to misunderstand an analogy dude.

Personally, I like the 'energy' of a race setting.  Obviously not every weekend, but a few times a year it is nice to see how the hard work and training is paying off in a more 'official" way.

Running around your neighborhood is to a race experience as sitting in your basement drinking Bud is to a party experience.

Competition is a big motivator to me.  I really like the Clydesdale division because it actually matches me up with other folks who theoretically should be about my speed.

I'm probably very shallow, but those little medals for placing in my division are actually a motivator for me.

Plus at $5 a race for our running club events it's not like how much it costs could actually be a factor.

After 3 years of running I'm finally getting to where I could almost be competitive in my age group even though I outweigh most of them by 40 or 50 pounds.  I would be fighting for 3rd or 4th though instead of 1st or 2nd in the Clydesdale division.

It's nice having a monthly race to look forward to.

                        Hey All.

Thanks for the great feedback. (1) I checked last years results. It was a hot year - almost 80, I think but the CLY div 3rd came in about 1:44. in my AG the 3rd came in about 1:37. My best time on HM (over 6 mo and 20 lbs ago) was 1:57.  - I dont think I'll place either way.

                        (2) Im coming into the last long week of marathon training. Birthday on Sunday. Decided to be less strict about the diet (and yes I plan on running this one in shoes). So, I figure 200+ wont be an issue.

I did place once. In a much smaller 5k. As a CLY. I got a pint glass. I dont plan to enter this division again. Thanks for the discussion.

I think the weight classes are cool - I have no need to worry about them since they're for tall/muscular people who naturally weigh more, not fat people.... but I think they're cool to see.

If I was under the weight race day, I'd tell the race director to switch my category.  Some of the weight class ones have weigh ins at packet pickup.(def for tris... Only a few running races have those divisions anymore - at least around here)
