Race: Sparkasse drei Länder Marathon race report

    Location: Bregenz, Austria

Weather: around 10C roughly 50F, some very cold wind

    Time: 3:05:32 / 56th over all

I don't really care much about marathons and I was officially retired from them after having failed 5 times (3 marathons, 2 50ks).

Truly the only reason I wanted to run it one more time was because I'd really like to have a sub 3 hour marathon to my name and with a 1h22 half back in March I figured I could try to run a sub 3 marathon without being completely and utterly destroyed at the end of it

    (Spoiler: it didn't work)

I found this race which sounded really interesting as it starts in the island in Lindau, Germany, and goes around lake Constance all the way to Bregenz in Austria, then further ahead to St Margrethen in Switzerland before turning around and going back to Bregenz for the finish inside a stadium. That's where the name comes from as Drei Länder means 3 countries. I figured there was a very high probability of the weather being very good and I had zero inclination towards running a marathon in bad weather.

I knew it would be difficult as my base from training for the half marathon time trial back in March was around 70 to 90km per week, roughly 6 to 7h20 per week.

I needed quite a bit more miles. I had no idea if the body would endure.

The training block was also made more difficult due to many external factors, most of which I would not change in retrospect.

I know traveling during marathon training is bad, but we got locked at home for nearly 15 months, the majority of those we could not leave our own town, a vast portion of it we could not go to a restaurant.

So when we got let loose we went traveling and fuck it all. Also, we were 18 months without seeing family and that was weighing very hard, especially when the news that my father had had a heart attack came back in June.

Having the 2nd vaccine shot a week before the race was also not something I could change, we wouldn't be able to travel to the race without it.

Still I wanted to go for sub 3. First of all because I don't care too much about a marathon result that was not a sub 3. Also, I knew I was in that fringe area between sub 3 and 3h05.

On race day I decided to go with a short sleeve t-shirt. In hindsight a long sleeve t-shirt would be better. A short sleeve t-shirt is fine in this weather for up to the half marathon, but the marathon is on another level and I was chilly during the race at times, especially in the windier parts.

The race started at exactly 10:30. I knew there was not a sub 3 marathon pacer, but I spotted the sub 90 half marathon pacer. They would run with us for 15km so I figured I'd tuck into that group and free my mind from pacing duties for a little bit.

That ended up being a good decision because the insta pace was all over the place due to tree cover and interference, I could only check the pace at km markers and the group seemed to be going at a good and steady pace. It was also nice to be running with the group as there was a very cold wind at some parts and I could hide away from it in the group.

At around the 3 mile mark the first dark patch started. I was feeling that the pace was too hot and I can see that the heart rate jumped straight into the 150's. I would feel uncomfortable from there to the end pretty much.

Once the half marathon people split off, I spotted a dude ahead who had told me he was going for a sub 3 a while ago. I figured I would be able to catch him as he had a 10m lead or so and tried to concentrate on that. At this point I was already feeling uncomfortable and I figured running with somebody would help.

I soon caught up to him and started running by his side.

At some point he said something in German, but I have no idea what he said. I figured maybe he meant that I should not be running right next to him so I started giving him some berth.

Around 24km another guy caught up to us and we started running in a pack of 3. Soon after, around 27km the first guy dropped behind and me and the new dude started running together. Then another guy joined us.

Then a 4th dude passed us. As this 4th dude passed us we suddenly formed a single file behind him like he was the locomotive of an imaginary train.

And I was the 4th one and I knew this was a bad sign.

We kept running together for a good long while, all the way to mile 21 at which point the wheels came off and the implosion began.

I soon couldn't keep up with them, and "locomotive guy" was further ahead already at this point.

In desperate mode I tried to chuck another gel in in hopes of regaining some energy.

I then passed a nice crowd and cheered with them. But it didn't last much.

I still managed to keep a good pace for a couple of miles, but around km 36 I had to slow down a bit as the cramps were coming and at km 38 I got cramps on both quads at the same time (again). At this point I had to do a full stop and literally limp for a few meters. Then I lifted one knee, lifted the other one, thought to myself, time to be a race walker. And so I started mimicking a race walker movement until soon I was able to shuffle ahead.

And that's how those last 2 miles passed. A bit of shuffling forward, quick 5 to 10s walks. On the last mile the crowd started forming a corridor and I kept my shuffling forward now without interruptions all the way to the finish line.

I pretty much lost the sub 3 in those last 2 miles as one was a 8:40 or something and the previous one was 9:50.

Coming up next: 7 days of zero running. I want to be a lazy sedentary person.

Another marathon? In between the swears at the end I'm sure I have said fuck the marathon about 40 times and that this is the last one about 30 times.

I can't predict the future but the prospect of doing this again is very, very low.

I'd have to become so fast that I'd be able to easy run a marathon to a sub 3 result.

I'm fairly certain I don't ever want to feel as destroyed and in such pain as I was at the end of this one. My shoulders were cramping. Both quads, cramping. My upper abs were cramping. My ankles felt shattered, like somebody took a hammer to them. And the worst part, the pain will go away very slowly.

This is absolutely not like a 5k. A 5k I have pain for 8 minutes and then it's GONE.

For now, I'll be happy that:

It was almost a 10 minute PR

There was an adorable little girl with one of those signs "touch here for extra energy" and a little mushroom drawn on it. I made sure to smile big and touch it for energy, I think it worked.

I will say I enjoyed the corridor of people over the last mile.

I crossed the finish line unable to sprint those last 200 in the track, but I made sure to take it all in, the crowd, the announcers and I even high fived the announcer saying my name.

The organization was literally perfect. There's absolutely nothing anybody can say about this, it was really top notch.

The course is pretty over green fields almost the whole way.

Crowd support was great on a really cold day.

It's a very nice region with many picturesque towns and a lot of activities up the mountains.

PS: my running coach totally went for it today (CJ Albertson) haha, balls of steel, kudos to him.

    Hot Weather Complainer

Flavio - Very enjoyable race report.  I think it's quite remarkable the amount of time you were hurting and crashing before your splits started to show it.  You can't be accused of being soft and not giving it everything.  That weather sounds perfect for me, possibly too warm, so I was surprised you got too cold.  Was the temperature not a true indicator with a big wind chill factor?

I completely understand the never again thoughts....but what if you had 4 months of stability where you can focus on nothing but marathon training?

      RIP Milkman

I believe you carried over a lot of fitness from the previous cycle.

The weather seemed to have been perfect and it's interesting to see that you, a native New Yorker suffers more at 32F than me. For reference my 5K race in Germany was at similar weather and I ran it in a singlet and shorts Big grin

Flavio - I pulled the above from a race report I made a couple of years ago where you basically told me I was soft for wearing a long sleeve shirt at 32F! Maybe you're just getting older, I always see those senior citizens wearing sweaters when it's 80F

In all seriousness, 50F and windy is where I'd throw on some light gloves and arm warmers, both of which I'd be willing to throw away if I got cold. You're right that the marathon can cold if you're underdressed, but you also pay the highest price for being overdressed via dehydration.

It really looks like you gave it a great effort. You can't make a decision on another one just yet. As I keep nagging Mark, it'll come back, the feeling of wanting another, especially when the cycle wasn't great.

I'll also add kudos on traveling instead of always training. I'm glad you don't look back and regret it. As someone who is very lazy and takes 10+ days off at a time from running, I approve this method

Cal - great race. I thought the wheels might be coming off a bit there, but you had a great recovery. Looking forward to hearing how the race went.

Flavio - firstly well done on the PR.  To be suffering from the 3 mile mark and still grind that result out is incredibly tough.  I mean, you expect at least 4-5 miles of misery in the marathon... but 20+?!  Wow.  And I'm glad you took the time to enjoy the finish too.  The story about the girl with the sign is cool too.  Anyway, you had a pretty disrupted build-up but I guess you can't predict life.

It sounds like a pretty cool event and a good one to have done.  More and more I'm trying to find unique, different races like that as well.

JMac - for the record, at no point in the last year have I thought "I want to do another marathon".  The grind of peak volume and the two months of broken-ness and misery after that marathon were the only times I've actually hated running for an extended period (i.e. longer than just a botched workout or two) and frankly running is too important to me to put myself in that position.  Not going to happen.

In contrast, every single time I think of that Southern Lakes HM back in May, I get a huge buzz.  It felt incredible to execute a race that well on a course that beautiful on a day that perfect.  That was the final nail in the coffin for me and marathons.

I wish there was a way to bet on this. I feel like this is very similar to me saying I'll never do an ultra marathon. I don't see myself doing one literally ever, but who knows if I'll feel different in 15 years. Hard to predict how anyone will feel at that point in their life. I would bet on it that you will do one more marathon in your life. It may not be for 10 years. But you'll do one, and then I will remind you of this . Cal: Sounds like you ran it tough and smart. On your day, Sub 3 was yours for the taking, bring on CIM.

Flavio: You must go again and get that sub 3!  Of course, you don’t have to.  But you do. You know it.  Easy for me to say ‘cause I’m built for longer stuff.  Kudos for trying, really!  If you can commit to another I can commit to train for a 1500 or a mile, sound fair?

DW: Your week doesn’t look any more convoluted than normal. Nor is it unusual to hear of new/flaring symptoms, tests, specialist visits and novel solutions. Hope the latest has now passed and sending you vibes for a string of boring weeks.

                  JMac: Awesome week.

I went vege for about 10 years but have been making up for lost time in the last year or so.

I didn’t post my last week, it went okay. Did 65mi/105k for that week with 3 workouts. Sunday wasn’t great, marathon effort was slow and it just felt shit. A sign to take a non-running day, which I did on the Mon, first one since August.  I didn’t run until Tue PM which gave me two and half days between runs and freshened me up nicely. The workouts this last week went better as a result, 57mi/92k for the week.

                  Last Tue: 6k @ 4:06/6:35 plus 6x300m hills

Steve - Dunno, I guess the weather experts in the thread can chime in, but yeah, it was literally that “wind chill” as in the wind was super chilly and froze my bones.

Jmac - I wonder what else you got in your little notebook of revenge 😂

Yeah arm warmers would be nice yesterday for when the wind hit after 15k

Marby - LOL yeah, dunno, like I said, if I can find a much better groove in life and run a super fast half and can follow it up with maybe 6 to 8 weeks of marathon prep, then a big maybe.

I guess I’m either just not built for it and the marathon training, or I have a super low threshold for pain 🤷‍♂️

Thanks everyone once again for all the great advice over the last few months and a special thanks to Cal. His direct assertive advice was just what I needed.

I'll go back now to where the cool kids hang, the sub 90 thread. Best of luck in your future races

Glad you were able to enjoy that aspect a bit, despite the misery you were feeling. RIP Milkman

Marby - most of the people I know that went vegetarian ended up going back. I can't believe you haven't had an off day in 2 months! I like using tune up races as a way to get an off day in pre-race without feeling guilty about it.

Flavio - I don't know why that one comment you made stuck in my head. Probably made me question my manhood. I can definitely see though that as you start sweating, and then the wind picks up, getting cold. I'll see you over in sub 90 in the spring, where we can sit around and listen to the Kiwis spend endless pages talking about races in Queensbridge and Doodoodin and JesusTemple and whether they're going to proceed due to level C lockdown.

ETA after seeing your post below: those all sound great. That's the marathon for ya though: very unique for each of us and we learn what works and doesn't work for us. Some folks need 18 weeks of a cycle. Some need 6 after a super strong base. It's one of the reasons you have to take multiple cracks at it. It's just like every other race: nobody runs one 5K and says wow, I'm never doing that again. You realize what you can do better the next time around. Obviously harder to do in a marathon, but it takes at least 3-4 tries in my opinion to get it right.

RP - probably will run one when PRs are no longer in the running.

JT - how are you feeling?

As I sit here 48 hours after the race still hating it, I have a couple of ideas I've built on my experience.

First - I need to average at least around 70 miles per week.

Second - I need to attack marathon training from above. I need to be running 75 miles VERY comfortably for a long period, at least 4 months, then lower the mileage as I enter marathon training. I also need to be comfortable with 30K long runs.

Adding marathon workouts AND increasing mileage seems to be an anti-pattern, a recipe for failure for people like me.

Third - It needs to be a shorter cycle, just 6-8 weeks with marathon specific work, from sign up to race day so I barely have time to think about it and don't get so stressed.

Fourth - I need to be faster to have a much larger cushion. I'm thinking at least a 1h20 half done close to the start of the marathon cycle, so that running 4:14/km - 6:50/mi is very easy.

Fifth - I need to be comfortable during the training block, ending the weeks always thinking I could do more. I think my sweet spot is at or below 80% of max, anything above my body protests violently.

Six - It needs to be a stable time with no trips, just boring training.

Seven - It has to be a marathon race with guaranteed perfect weather, like this one. I won't bother with a bad weather race.

Eighth - Gotta watch nutrition. The nutritionist basically told me that I was not eating enough calories to sustain the training. Hopefully by getting the second item in check this would be adjusted.

So yeah, not saying never again, but quite a few things need to happen, if that ever happens then yeah, I guess I can give it another try.

I have an hour or so before leaving my hotel in Boston, so, I thought I would share my impressions of the race.

I think weather was fine, not very good, but for Boston it was not bad at all. Yes, the humidity was high - like 95% they say, but there was a cloud cover up until mile 16-17 (in my case - and I started around 9:45am? The crowd support was pretty amazing for a Monday race and no holiday in Boston, it really fired me up every time I've got through the crowds. Organization was as always - great, no issues, the bib pickup and expo was so less crowded on Sunday afternoon, it was very pleasant. The rolling start, I think, worked very well - no crowds, no waiting in the village or in the corral, came from the bus, visited porta-potty and off I went - I would love to have that rolling start in the future. I also think people were mostly very well organized and 4 hours marathoners didn't load buses with 2:40-2:50 runners. I only wish I had a few minutes, and some space to do a little bit warm up, but I think my slow first mile was good enough for a warmup Smile

As for my race - well, somehow I didn't feel the real energy from the start. First mile is like 120 ft down, I ran it pretty easy and usually with such decline I would be at 6:30-6:20 pace and there I was at 6:50. Somehow I didn't feel freshness, like I usually do, at first few miles - my legs just didn't rotate enough. I have to apply some effort to pick up the pace (I was thinking about 6:35 pace initially - yeah, I know). I was good for first 10K (still slower than 6:35 though), but after that I started to lose seconds every mile and by half distance, when I checked my watch and saw 6:50 average (which is about 1:30 for the half), I knew that even sub 3 is not going to happen.

The sun came at mile 16 and it started to became a little bit uncomfortable, but nothing really bad - I started to pour 3 cups of water over my head at each aid station  and I think it was helping a lot. My legs just didn't move fast enough - I felt like I run fast, but the watch was saying otherwise - at some point, at some mile with good downhill I was only able to run something like 7:06, it kind of was ruining my spirit, but I just decided that I won't give up and continue making some efforts and just put as much as I can (but still knowing sub 3 is out of the questions). Only after I passed those 3 "hills", which felt surprisingly not as hills (but still slowed me down up to 7;45 pace) I realized that I only have 5 miles to run and most of it is slight downhill. So, I just went for it, when I knew the end is near, it just gave me some strength and I managed to run at a decent pace, like I did at the beginning of the race - still slowed down at mile 25 though, but last half a mile I was flying - I don't know, I think I passed hundreds of runners at that 5 mile stretch - I wish I could run the whole distance like this, but, of course, I know that was not possible.

Anyway, 3:03:58, my slowest time since 2012. But no excuses - I might say it was a sore throat bug I've got from my daughter on Friday, I could say it was non ideal weather, I could certainly say I am getting really older (I think that's the most valid reason Smile, but at the end - ideal preparation for a marathon happens really rarely - in my 20 marathons it was probably only once Smile. I liked everything about this experience, except travel - I really prefer local races, so much less stressful.

Now, some rest and then back to training - hopefully my "down" mood will go away and I start getting positive vibes again.

                              Running Problem

                              Problem Child

JMac nah, they're really not worth it. At leas the ones I have access to (mountains) the training and time commitment to a 50k or farther just makes it unappealing. Six and a half hours was a fast day for me, plus a 30 minute drive to the race start, and maybe another 30-40 minutes after the race just hanging out and eating the food they offered (one race had a massage) just makes the entire thing an 8 hour day. The training, for me, also just isn't appealing. I'd want to be in the mountains running similar terrain so every run has a 15-20 minute addition to get to the hills, and 4 hour long runs both days of the weekend just totally destroys any possibility of doing stuff with family. I'd honestly say do it now while your daughter is young and you don't have as much going on, or wait until she is 10-15 years old. Seeing the people our age doing even a trail half marathon with 2 kids amazes me. Nevermind the volunteering and time commitment to a 12-17 hour 50 mile race. If you're not feeling good 3/4 of the way through a 50 miler you have a LOT more miles to go than 3/4 of the way through a marathon. Although, with your marathon training mileage you could do an ultra and the only "change" would be figuring out what you'd eat. Heck, it might even HELP your shorter race PRs, but honestly, just avoid it because they aren't worth it.

EDIT: You're racing a half marathon this weekend, correct?

Flavio good to see you're planning your next race.

                                EDIT: I still can't imagine running a 1:22 half marathon. I hope you get a sub 3.

Cal they can't all be great marathons. It will be good to see you at CIM. Maybe I'll be able to chase you down and you can pull me to another PR.

                                My week

After the 10k on Sunday I picked new training paces. It put me at a 3:02 marathon which is just enough for me to put the remaining effort I didn't want to, into training for a sub 3 marathon. I cranked up the paces, and Tuesday's 3x1 mile was 100% about testing the 10k paces outside of race conditions without the superfast carbon fiber Zoom Fly shoes. Legs didn't feel happy about it and cooperated. It mirrored the workout from the week before (when I was doubting a 6:30/mi pace before running a 6:23/mi pace) and with the 10k being just 2 days before I felt great overall. Thursday's M paced workout was targeting a 6:58/mi pace and I definitaly didn't expect to be capable of running 6:50-6:55/mi pace. I kept telling myself in the early miles I had to make it to 8, while also saying "if I feel this good at 6 or 7 I'll go for 9." I was happy with the overall result, even if the last mile wasn't enjoyable as it never is on the loop, and it took a day I was kind of depressed about work and turned it into what I remember. Marathon training is what I care about. Not work. Work will always be work and I'll never actually care about it in the sense of "I'm here to make you see me as wanting to contribute and be part of something bigger." It's 100% "I'm here to do the work you assign, and I'm not here to make friends, or socialize, or contribute. You're a paycheck."

Saturday felt good even if the pace slowed down. I don't like 20 milers because of how much time they take. Starting as early as I did makes it better, and having someone to do it with also makes it better.

Winter has hit. Sprinklers have been winterized. Winter layers have come out. So what if the weekend forecast is 60-70F. Overnights we're seeing 29-35 so I'm firmly in winter training mentality. everything is going to be cold. forever.

Biggest weekly mileage during trianing. I didn't exactly PLAN on getting 70. It was a thought on Thursday or Friday and I'd mostly abandoned it until the 20 miler came up. Sunday's run really made me feel great because there was only some sore hamstrings during the final miles of the 12.5 mile run. Not bad to run a half marathon after a 20 miler. I think my first half marathon was a 1:56 and I'd trained for it by NOT doing a 20 mile long run the day before.
