I have back issues and my doctor always says I should do as much as I can that doesn't hurt. If you can run without pain, run. If you can walk without pain, walk. If you have pain no matter what you do, gentle exercise (like walking) that doesn't make it worse is the best.
I recommend the McKenzie exercise protocol for lower back pain.
I agree with Ilana. I also have had back issues for over 30 years and usually, running easy allows me to loosen the muscles and stretch them a little more and recover faster. The McKenzie exercises are very helpful.
Maybe try running and see how it feels? When my back is bugging I can normally run. Sometimes it's about all I can do.
Right now I am still having trouble walking. It is slowly getting better so I am going to wait to try running again
My back hurts all the time. I have to push through the pain for a mile or so before things loosen up and the pain disappears.
Most of my pain is gone. I ran 3 yesterday.
I still need to work on not pulling it again.
I saw docs who said 'that's why i stopped running'
then i saw a PT who is a former gymnast, who told me its all about posture while running, shoulders back more so the spine is curved the right way. It's her fault that I am still running 10 years later.
My pain is gone but my back is still tight
I have done 1 run and will run in the morning
I started back lifting but with light weights
Ilanarama i started doing the McKenzie exercises.
I am doing a lot more yoga and stretching.
