I know the dead legs feeling well, but thankfully it's more of a distant memory than a recent one. I find that it's worse than the sore legs you get from running hills for first time in a while or a race. I was having it a lot during my first year back into serious training about 3 years ago. Although I can't promise it would be the same for you, I've found that the more I've run the less problem I've had with it. The body tends to adapt but it takes time and it takes persistance. Days off have never helped me as much as short, easy runs--especially if those runs are on the grass. Soft surfaces make a big difference.
Age 60 plus best times: 5k 19:00, 10k 38:35, 10m 1:05:30, HM 1:24:09, 30k 2:04:33
