I'm 6ft 5 (1.96m), and weigh 16st 6 (230 lbs), I'm running my first half Marathon on 27th April 2008 (Read 1484 times)

As you can see, my times are not really that quick. Overall average mile is 8:58 and coming down. I do easy runs too. I just think there's a lot left in the tank after the longer ones. I still feel there's A LOT of room for improvement, thats why I'm pushing for quicker times (for now). When the cricket season starts I will be jogging less too as most of time will be taken up by that. Lee

Wow, shouldn't you consider rugby? You must really like cricket, and be good at it, too. I wouldn't put quite so much emphasis on running fast, if i were you, but having said that it seems you have a training plan, and you are obviously young and strong, so good luck! (I am 6ft and about 164lbs. and I thought I was big for a runner!) Simon.

      PBs since age 60:  5k- 24:36, 10k - 47:17. Half Marathon- 1:42:41.

6'1" @ 224 chiming in I race at about the same pace as you do - I've got a HM coming up in a few weeks and expect to hit 1:51-1:55. You might want to take a look at the way your train. Running to PR every time can often lead to burn out. In Daniel's Running formula, it says to adjust your pace about every 4-6 weeks depending on how training is going. Run your easy runs easy, your tempo runs comfortably difficult and some of your long runs pregressively.
I try and run quicker than before because i believe that i have a lot of room for improvement. I have started to change the running methods. I try and run the shorter one's quicker and the longer ones easier. I have a 10k on sunday, and i would love to break the 50 minute with the first go. But being realistic i think it would be more a 52 minute race. The more long runs I do, the faster the shorter ones get too. E.g. 4/5 miles is now just over 8 min mile. But saying that, the 8 miles i run on sunday was 8:30 min mile. Its good fitness, cricket season around the corner too. Lee

          Why is it sideways?

Good work, Lee. Sorry I was a wise-ass the other day. I was all worked up over something else. Run well!

            Outside Lane

You are moving fast Lee. Keep us posted on your progress towards your HM. I have one at beginning of May (my first). I am about 200 lbs and hoping (praying) I don't embarrass myself. My pace is not as fast as yours - but you inspire me!

              See how they run...

I'll put the rest of my own training programme on my Running Log so that you can see the runs i plan to do. I have a 10k race tomorrow (16th March) and i'm hoping to break 53:07 (8:30 minute miles / 5:20 minute km). I'm really starting to enjoy it now. 7 weeks training done, 6 weeks to go. Why don't you make you log public so the pros(tongue in cheek) can advise you further. Good luck in your half marathon. Lee J

I've done it. 10k down, half marathon to go (only 6 weeks!!). I ran the Sheffield 10k today, on an unknown course (my first ever 10k) so i didn't know where the mile markers where etc, so I found it hard to pace myself. 3 Laps of just over 2 miles each. I targeted myself 53 minutes. (2 laps of 18 and last lap of 17), but ended up running up a little quicker. First two laps were 17 each and last lap was 16:10, totalling 50:10. As i got close to the end I picked up the pace as much as possible, but still finished on 50:10. My target was 53:07 (8:30 minute mile), but i ran a 50:10 (8:02 min mile). I am very happy with the time, but slightly (only very slightly) disappointed with not beating the 50 minute barrier. The race-results website will say 50:20 as i crossed the start line after 10 seconds. (Middle of the pack). I enjoyed the day immensley and look forward to the Sheffield Halh Marathon in six weeks. Into the wild

Nice work Lee. Good luck in the half; you have time to look at adding some distance to your long run.

                    Shut up and run

I can now run up to 8 miles at 8 minute per mile (5 min km). Over the next 5 weeks I will be running longer runs at the weekends too. I have a couple of 10's, some 12's then my half marathon in just under 5 weeks. I'm still hoping for a 1hr 50m half marathon. Maybe after that I can concentrate on my cricket training !!
