Mother of Cats

dwave wtf is going on at the Capitol building? National Guard being requested to stay there another 60 days? Is this still due to the whole "storm the capitol" thing a month or however long ago that was, or is there some new threat going down?

So....in the past March 4 was Inauguration Day, before it was changed to January 20.

There is a group of people who believed President Trump would retake the Presidency on January 20.  And when that didn't happen, they swapped to March 4 (much like those who keep postponing the Rapture).

Thus, there's been some chatter of an attempted repeat of what happened on January 6, so some precautions were taken.    The request to extend the National Guard stay was made much earlier, in anticipation of today.  Unless that request has been made a second time?  If so, I haven't heard about that.

Marky Mark - may your life (and all the other Kiwis) be much more boring soon.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Steve yes these tsunamis don't come to much but better safe than sorry I guess. The surf is primo too bugger it.

I'm currently sitting on my couch about 500m from the ocean . Picked up my 15 yr old son from Mount Maunganui college as he said there were only 2 kids in his class. Made his day by buying him a steak pie from BP petrol station ⛽

I never felt the quake but my daughter in Christchurch did and my in-laws in Taihape also.

Mark the funniest part of your week has to be the speeding ticket . I get something about every 3 years. Last was talking on my phone while driving.

I think I must have the same cold as you. Its lingering on enough that today I didn't run.

Just to make it worse, as he was writing out the ticket he got some notification and checked it, apparently a disqualified driver had just driven past!!  Seems a bit worse than me driving 65 in a 50kph zone (which is usually 70kph, just temporarily lower due to roadworks!).

In America we had a pipeline that was going to go through Native American/Tribal land known as Keystone XL. I think Dakota Access PipeLine ( DAPL) was about the same time. The current president stopped it along with some drilling in wildlife areas approved last minute by the last President. Hence the ‘keystone” comment.

Oh wow, this thread took off.

Kiwis I hope the Earthquarkes are nothing major. That (and Tsunamis) is one disaster I've never had any experience with.

James good idea swapping the train crossing but I explained it poorly, it is miles 2 & 11 though both could be rerouted at the cost of adding elevation and being unable to use a paved trail along a lake and instead running on a (not busy) road. I'm not the RD nor a regular participant so I just don't care that much though I run with the RD occasionally so I may bring it up. Oddly enough, that race is where I PRd my half, and it's also the last race I ran entirely without a watch!

DWave -- good analogy -- Rovatti  great drive by zinger!

Mark  you got a speeding ticket for running too fast? I've always wanted one of those.

Keystone - (trying to keep this totally non-political) other than going through Native lands, one of the main complaints I've heard is that pipelines  have leaked in the past and been undetected long enough they just pump hundreds of thousands of tons of tar sands into other wilderness areas, thus polluting them (and in particular ruining sources of fresh water)... my question is with our current technology aren't changes in pressure from even very small leaks totally detectable? or are we moving that much oil so quickly that you cannot possible stop it with a lesser volume of loss? As (the wrong type of) engineer I just feel like this should be a totally solvable issue.

Keen  lol. It was Amberbach for me but my first real taste of cheap beer was Imperial in Costa Rica. At the time I think I was paying $0.085 US per can and it was just as bad as you'd expect.

Mick - Yeah, go out at 4:30 and hold on for dear life. You should be suffering a lot by 3500m.

I can speak to a good amount of this from direct experience - in my younger years I spent many summers and school breaks helping my dad, who owns a little welding company and has built untold miles of pipelines.

Pipelines have run through tribal lands for decades, with approval from the tribes just the same as if those pipelines went through any single private citizens land. They are also compensated for this as anyone else would - contracts are drawn up that details exactly what anyone gets for allowing a pipeline to cross their property and what is done to the land after the pipeline is put through. This almost always involves backfilling the trench dug for the pipeline in a manner that allows for placing the top soil back on the surface so that grasses/crops can grow back properly, and if not farmland the areas are frequently reseeded to native grasses. For farmland it usually doesn't work to simply replant wheat or another crop just in the stretch above the pipeline, so farmers are compensated for the "lost" crops, but the areas are replanted during the next cycle as if the pipeline was never there.
Most of the issues with pipelines going through tribal lands boil down to compensation. I've known of lots of people who want more in compensation for a pipeline to cross their properly (or even for an oil/gas company to just park their vehicles on one side of the road while putting in the pipeline on someone else's land on the other side of the road) than the company was willing to pay. In this case the pipeline is usually put in on a slightly different route than originally planned so they can cross the land of someone who is willing to allow this for what the company is willing to pay. This can be an issue when trying to cross a large area of land they're denied access to, however.

As for leaks, those are very rare. Pipes are coated with a material that is completely impervious to the elements so that they do not rust or deteriorate, aside from the about 1 foot on either end to allow for welding (this material burns when heated, thus not coating the ends). After welding (each weld has 4 or 5 passes on average, each with a different purpose) every single weld is x-ray'd to make sure there are no weaknesses or impurities in the weld - when done properly the weld actually becomes the strongest section of the pipe. Any welds that don't pass are cut out and redone. After the welds pass, a shrink-wrap cuff is placed around the weld and overlaps the weatherproofing on each side so that no bare metal is ever exposed.
Once this is all done the pipeline can be put in the ground, and before oil or gas is pumped through the entire length is pressure tested (tested to pressures well above what should ever be placed on the pipe during normal operation) to make sure there are no leaks that have snuck through.

There are many different ways leaks can be detected, such as (but not limited to):
                          - acoustic sensors detecting changes in harmonics caused by changes in fluid flow
                          - pressure/flow change detection
                          - Temperature sensors
                          - Imaging using cameras or thermals.

If a leak is detected flow is cut off at two points, one on either side of the leak. Once it's stopped the pipeline gets dug out, the faulty section cut out, then replaced and fully inspected again.
Probably the most common cause of a leak is actually someone digging in to the pipeline when they weren't supposed to (usually just digging without knowing the pipeline is there) - a weld failing or other defect in the pipe causing a leak is quite rare, more rare than train wrecks causing spills.

zeb yeah I think the leaking of pipes was a big "we don't want the pipeline" sticking point. I don't know much about pipes other than they hold water and gas and natural gas and all kinds of stuff, and like "all kinds of stuff" things get old and/or need to be maintained. It's funny to me because locally there is a ditch that was going to be enclosed and people FREAKED out and the project was recently dropped. "I let my dogs drink from that" and "the trail used to maintain it that we run/walk on will be closed if you put in a pipe" were the big arguments.

dwave Thanks for the update. Looks like the Guard was asked to stay longer. Probably due to COVID 19.

Apparently I'm in some kind of decent shape. I can run a sub 2 half marathon "because it's Friday" with a few stops and walking along the way. Some people have to train for that kind of speed, and I was once one of them. Now...it's just because I have all my work done for the week.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.
