Good Bad & The Monkey

IK,R? If only we’d actually implemented those death panels, we wouldn’t have to worry about these old and sick people. I just wanna run, baby.

Too bad they're shutting down all these races. The average age of death from Covid-19 in the state of Massachusetts is 82 years old. 98% of deaths have underlying health conditions.

... I don't understand why the truth of the data isn't being spoken ...

What a complete and utter load of bullshit.  The data is widely available, open and from multiple sources.

        Updated Massachusetts Covid-19 data:

        https://www.mass.gov/doc/covid-19-dashboard-may-28-2020/download

Interesting data which matches up with most all over the world.  Average age of death = 82 (higher than average age of death overall).  Then you get people saying "you want old people to die" when you point out facts.  No, clearly no-one wants that, let's protect the vulnerable and not cause more pain via poverty than necessary.

Incidentally, NZ had death #22 yesterday, a 96 year old who was diagnosed with Covid in April and had recovered.  As Covid was recorded as the secondary reason for death, it is included in the Covid stats "to keep it consistent with previously recorded deaths".  So it's possible that not a single one of the 80 and 90 year old dementia patients who died had Covid recorded as the primary cause.

I don't see how. States may be starting to open up, but not to the level of packing 30,000 people into starting corrals. No one really knows, but it's hard to see them pulling off any of the major fall marathons. CIM is not till December, so maybe a better chance but still iffy. I guess Boston can push out the registration deadline a little, but IDK how far they can go.

Registration deadline?? What deadline? Registration closes in September because it fills immediately. Did not use to be the case. You don’t remember the “Last Chance for Boston” marathon in February?

The crazy registration situation with Boston is one of the many reasons I don’t run it anymore (well OK, I don’t really run any marathons anymore). Leaving registration open for months longer would be the best thing that could happen.

You do realize that even though the ones who will die are not the ones running the marathon.  It is the marathon runners who come in contact with those vulnerable ones and give them the virus that they caught at the marathon.  Stopping the spread of the virus through the community is the point, not that the young healthy runners will only get mild symptoms and survive so let them run.

So there's this nursing home with 30 dementia patients and 80 employees somewhere near Boston. They've  kept COVD at bay, or maybe dealt with 2 waves of it passing through the residents and staff. One of the staff, works at a water stop -- screaming, cheering, totally swept up in the day.  At some point, a runner comes past who is infected and asymptomatic. Or maybe this runner has a beer or two and chats with the dementia care worker while they are picking up dinner at Murphy's Irish, "entertaining" them with tails of training and qualifying.

However it happens...the necessary viral load is delivered.

Tuesday afternoon at 3PM the worker goes in for the start of their shift. Asymptomatic. Viral load now moves into the dementia care population.

So yeah, 82 year old Mothers and Fathers, Granparents, war heros...they're not at risk when you're running the Boston Marathon.

It's all in the data. This exact scenario is in the data.

That same scenario could happen any year with the flu.  In Massachusetts there are 600 deaths per 100,000 for 85+ year olds every year.  I hope the workers are careful every year, because the flu could also wipe out those residents.

We have pharmacological treatments and vaccines to mitigate flu. The only existing COVID prevention is non-pharmacological...distancing.

You've done a fantastic and impressive thing in NZ in dealing with COVID. You demonstrated the value of an effective government and committed, well-informed citizenry pulling together to achieve a well-articulated objective.  That is not the case here.

The stats on flu deaths do not lie.  Vaccines do not protect against many strains - the danger is there every year (and I'm sure workers in a rest home are extremely careful).

I could not disagree more with your assessment of NZ.  We got off lightly for several reasons:

                      -  Isolation

                      -  Population density

                      -  Covid not being anywhere near as lethal as first thought

We could have avoided some of the approaching economic catastrophe if  we'd shut the borders when it was obvious that was the only source of the virus, or at least implemented effective quarantining of anyone entering the country.  Australia did not lock down anywhere near the level we did and have fewer cases and deaths per capita and they don't have the advantages at the level that we have them.  We have one active case left in the whole country and yet we are still in level 2 lock down.  Unfortunately our govt is on the side of politics immune to media criticism (in our country anyway).

                              From CDC:

                              ...

The overall vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the 2017-2018 flu vaccine against both influenza A and B viruses is estimated to be 40%. This means the flu vaccine reduced a person’s overall risk of having to seek medical care at a doctor’s office for flu illness by 40%. Protection by virus type and subtype was: 25% against A(H3N2), 65% against A(H1N1) and 49% against influenza B viruses.

                              ...

40%, 25%, 65%. And we seem to be OK with those percentages for the flu.

                                ...

According to an estimate by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 45 million cases of the flu in the United States during the 2017-2018 influenza season, resulting in an estimated 810,000 flu-associated hospitalizations and an estimated 61,000 flu-associated deaths.

                                ...

Btw, when you talk about flu and a calendar year, you could easily scrap off at least May - September period when it is almost non-existent - so, it's not 12 months. But thing still stays - we are OK with 61 thousands deaths from flu, and that is after all the vaccination "efforts".

Btw, anybody was thinking about what vaccination actually does to our immune system? Can the vaccination actually tell our immune system to relax and not to be afraid of anything, not fight anything - like not fight covid-19? Just a thought...
