Actually, it was over 10.5! Next weekend I have my first 10 mile race--I am really excited! And I have a new secret weapon for runs of over 90 minutes or so...Jelly Belly jelly beans! I had energy through the entire run, instead of bonking near the end. Big grin k

Congrats! You're gonna do great! Smile Mmm... jelly beans... Methinks I'd better go eat dinner...

      Roads were made for journeys...

Eaten during the run? That just might work. My problem is that dumping sugar into the system can lead to a high then a crash A BIG CRASH! However during the run the sugar might be used as fast as it enters the system which would avoid the crash! I see some very careful testing coming up! Better check my supply of test strips

To paraphrase an old poster: Today is the first day of the rest of your training. It doesn’t matter where you started or how far you’ve come. Today is the day. Your training didn’t start 6 weeks ago. Your training started the last time you hit the road. John “the Penguin” Bingham Life is not tried, it is merely survived if you're standing outside the fire

It's definitely worth a try. All I know is that last weekend about 80 minutes into a 110 minute run I went from fine to feeling like I couldn't take another step. I'm pretty hypoglycemic, so I figured it was a blood sugar issue. Sure enough, yesterday I could have gone longer than 120 minutes, but I didn't want to push myself too hard only a week before my 10 miler. Not sure what form of sugar/fuel/carbs you'd want to try, but the Jelly Belly beans are very portable and tasty...about as simple a sugar as a person could find, I think. Helps prevent cottonmouth, too. Smile k

Hey - big congrats on your first time into "double figures". You'll have that warm glow of pride all day today. If you are racing next week make sure you take it quite easy this week. You don't want to have "left your best miles in training" as old UK running guru Bruce Tulloh used to say. And you will be sore for a couple of days and extra prone to that random injury - run slow....... Don't know about the jelly beans tho' - too much sucrose. You should look at some of the specialist gels that are out there - same portability and much less likely to provoke "bonk" as they are usually glucose syrup for direct energy to the system and maltodextrin. Don't start them till half way thru the run either would be my advice. Before that a diluted specialist sports drink would be best - assuming you've had a complex carbs rich meal 3-4 hours b4 the race. I ran a "milestone" too yesterday - first half marathon as a V50.After breakfast 4 hours before the race, I drank very diluted sports drink in the 2 hours before. Then water at mile 3, sports drink mile 6, water mile 9. It seemed to work as my last 3 miles were the fastest. I've pretty much used this in anything I do that is around 2 hours or more and I never feel totally wrecked as a result. There's a lot written about "try what is best for you" but I think it's pretty much undisputed that you should have complex carbs before. Hydrate well early race and get direct energy boost from half way to supplement muscle glycogen. Too much of most of the sports drinks really can upset your stomach and give you cramps late on. Well done again and good luck for next week Charlie

I'll bet some of those are pretty funny! Probably something to the effect of "gee, with all this running I should be at my goal weight in no time!" (yet here I sit over a year after joining and I am STILL holding steady, LOL) Big grin k
