Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Cfarr thanks I haven't run a half since 2015 when I put together about 18 weeks at 50 mpw and ran 1.24 even. I've probably got a similar cycle going now but I'm 53 not 47 anymore.

My son training for x country started my running as well.

Zebano that's frustrating. I've never had PF but my Achilles has moaned at me plenty of times over the years.

Nice job on the heel drops.

Keen thanks for adding my race. For some reason I thought Steve was our leader 🤔

I took yesterday off and went kayak fishing which has left me with a pinched up lower back again. Its either the sitting for 3 hours in the kayak or the dragging it over the sand that does it. Anyway it should free up by Sunday.

Man I’m looking forward to this. Irrespective of the result, I can’t think of many places I’d rather race and I’m struggling to think of anywhere better to finish a race than by the lake in Wanaka. It’s gonna be fun!

Sadly my heel flared up Wednesday night so I'm scouring the internet for exercises that I haven't tried whilst I swim a lot (for me). I'm about to do a ton of eccentric heel drops (Alfredson protocol = 180 / day) as the achilles on that foot is sore and cranky all the time (i.e. it's a hope and a prayer ... and something to do while I don't run).

Since you mentioned scouring the internet, this study (which I read about on Podium Runner) might be of interest.

It seems to say that for people with one kind of Achilles tendinopathy, heel lifts seemed to be as effective as the Alfredson exercises.  I wonder whether switching to shoes with higher drops would have the same helpful effect as inserting heel lifts; when I've had Achilles or calf trouble, higher-drop shoes have usually helped (though they seem to put a little more stress on my knees).

1:09:41 on the watch, first place. Watch had it at 21km but they re-measured the course yesterday and some guy who knows way more about GPS than me thought it was right so whatever.

Not sure I’ll call it a PB but man it felt good. Beautiful weather, amazing scenery, perfect day. Turning the corner with a mile to go to see the mountains, lake and town centre laid out below on a bluebird day was just straight up breathtaking.

After having moments late last year where I was seriously wondering if I’d ever get anywhere close to the heights of 2019/early 2020 this felt incredible.

Mark - great work on the win.  Is that your first win?  Even if 21.1km, the downhill means I would not count it.  I consider your true PB to be 1:12 at Christchurch.

Mark sounds like a buzz finishing first on a beautiful course.

21kms close enough for a Kiwi course .

Well done Mark - I think it's up to you what you consider your PB.  Nothing wrong with having multiple records - flat course, hilly course, easy course, hot day.

Well done Mark! Racing should be about having fun!

We are all too serious about it 😁

You have my stamp of approval to call it a PR (not that it matters anything haha)

I saw the pictures in Strava, stunning views indeed.

                      And beautiful pink shoes.

Sorry to hear you don't like sheep 🐑 (Strava banter)

Zeb - ugh, it seems to be the same recurring injury. Here hopes it comes right soon 🙏

One of my local running mates giving me some negative vibes about using Next % saying can't be counted for PBs which put a downer on my first time using them in a time trial tomorrow 🙃

Mate. That is absolute rubbish. Most elites I see wear themand plenty of other s use them too because they are good and they make a difference. They’re entirely legal and available to all. But they’re not magic and they’re not gonna somehow make an average runner into Kipchoge, there’s still no substitute for hard work. Sounds like your mate is just jealous tbh.

Go out and enjoy them. I wasn’t convinced until I tried them and I wouldn’t race in anything else now.

2nd half win, I won Omaha Half in 2018 (ironically a hot, beachside half, pretty much the exact opposite of today's cold race in the mountains).  Also I didn't run 1:12 at Christchurch.
