Should I do a walk/run 5k or wait (Read 108 times)

RunfunTeresa

Hello, My goal is to run a 5k, but, now can only walk/run. I did a walk/run several months ago but life-issues interfered with consistent training. The possible 5k is in mid-Dec & I was about to register, but, wanted some advice. Maybe I should wait until I can do a full run for a 5k? Thanks!

Google park run and your city/area.  Doesn't cost anything and you can usually do any weekend...

If you enjoy participating in races, it doesn't really matter whether you walk it, run it, or walk/run it. Many people do walk/run in marathons. Go have fun. If you want to improve your fitness and speed, keep on training and the next race you do will be faster. The point is to have fun and enjoy a healthy activity.

Happy to send you a FREE structured safe plan to run a 5K injury free. If you rush the process you get hurt in this sport. It take weeks amd weeks to adjust to the stresses of running.

You did not state how far you currently run or your weekly mileage, both factors in determining if you can run for over 3 miles in like five weeks time. If it was me I'd run at an easy pace at least 5 days a week and increase very slightly the distance each time, lets say by .15 mile (just a bit less than 1/7 of a mile). Even starting from zero with the first run being just jogging .15 miles, after 20 runs I'd be doing a 3 miler (20 x.15= 3). You may add some walking in before or after the run if desired. Of course if you try this and push the speed you may have injuries, too much too soon. Learn to listen to your body and back off if it feels too stressed. Note that not only do many people run/walk the 5ks but there are many who just walk it!

Wait until you can run the whole race.  Wait until you can run 10k continuously.   That can be done quicker than you think possible.   Run easy each day adding distance when you feel good.  The body is amazing.

                  4-15-23  Zion 100 - 27:59

My wife has walked several 5K's.  Her fastest time is 51 minutes.  And there were many people behind her.

Go for it.  Walk as much as you need to in order to finish. The end result counts as running the 5K regardless of how much walking you do.

Whatever time you get will be your PR (Personal Record) until you are able to finish faster. It will be incentive to get out there and train for the next race.

This!  Go for the Parkrun as they’re free and mostly non competitive and have a very friendly vibe with socialising afterwards.

Most of the Parkruns I’ve done have a cafe on site to chill out and chat with other runners/walkers.

I miss our local parkrun. It's still on hold due to COVID.

Yes, if you run/walk a 5k, you won't come in last.  I would recommend that you not enter any one-mile races for now, however.  I discovered the hard way that it's easy to come in last in one of those!

nowhere near a good runner BUT i do like running (and my weights, brazilian jiujitsu etc).

run/walk is absolutely a viable strategy. I just did a half marathon run/walk over the weekend just over 1:53, which is a better time than my previous attempt at 1:57 (all running).

Thank all of you, so much! I hurt my ankle (minor) doing a w/r and plan to start again. I also do a 2-3 mile "walk-only" twice wkly. Goal is to w/r 3x week even if I'm tired after work.

Good luck. Regardless of your goals, getting out there and walking or running or any combination thereof if beneficial. At least from my limited perspective.
