How to PR in a Trail Race.... (Read 403 times)

Just follow the leaders off the course. Anyone else do the Ugly Mudder in Reading, PA yesterday? Was supposed to be 7.25 miles, but the leaders took 400 runners (out of 675) with them off course and we only ran 5.65 miles. The good news is that my race strategy worked fine. I came in in the mid 100's last year but noticed there weren't many good places to pass, so I went out hard yesterday... I was getting tired when I realized that the race was going to be ended abruptly. Finished in 53rd place. (With so many runners going off course, they elected not to DQ anyone.) It was funny being told that I had a quarter to go when I thought I had two miles... So that's what having a kick feels like. Smile

Oops! Blush I ran a "10k" on New Year's Day that ended up being 5.45 miles...so I PRd! Wink I knew something was up when I hit the 5 mile sign and my Garmin said ~4.5. There was an out-and-back section...the turn-around point had been set too soon. I wasn't too upset---the return on that out/back section was EVIL...super high winds, biting snow, bitterly cold.

Getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to

remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.

I think I heard they had to change the course at the "last minute" (days prior) - I guess not everyone knew that.

Yeah - the steps to the Pagoda were condemned.. but everyone knew about that at the start. What I'm not sure of is if the detour off the steps was clearly marked... we ended up missing an almost 2mile dog leg...
