Nah, they die a death when Flavio comes through one of his annual reviews and just deletes 80% of his posts.

Keen - Agree with all others on Houston IF your legs feel good. If they feel trashed, then just go longer. I tried to run a half marathon 5 weeks after Boston and it didn't go as well as I expected, but I also had ran the race for real.

Flavio and Steve - That's the kind of talk that brings DWave out of the shadows!

My legs are sore/tight right now, but sitting at a desk sure isn't helping. I'm trying to get up to walk around as much as I can to loosen things up. They do, of course, feel fine after the first 200m or so running. It's just when I'm sitting around. I'll see how they do through the rest of the week while continuing to keep my eyes on airline ticket prices. Houston would be nice, since it probably is the fastest race in the entire region.

I just went to look at the Houston course which looks great, based on the weekend I stayed there, and it says it's sold out.  Or do you have a back way into the race?

Expletive deleted!! That must have just been updated. When I checked earlier it only said the half was sold out.

Death Valley. It’s below sea level and pretty flat. No once knows about the advantage because it’s so low key.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Steve - ok, I'll stop being an ass. This time of the year it's much better to have warm weather as people travel around to be with their families. My mom's family is gathering and we're going to do a lot of outdoorsy stuff, including a massive BBQ. You guys are having a weird summer, though I guess it makes sense given the latitude you're at.

Keen - good luck on the hunt for marathons. The US has so many it's crazy, though probably most are unreachable to you due to cost/travel duration etc.

Mark - I'm even considering taking a break from running to see if I can finally make the necessary gains in strength that I need, before father time takes its toll on me. Madness I know!

If I can get at least to a 150% body weight dead lift I'd be set for a while. I might even do crazy difficult stuff like you know completing a marathon without hitting a catastrophic wall.

I might go back to 1500m training just so I can do more lifting.

                  I'm 110% overthinking this! sigh....

me - for some reason I had some heavy legs today but had an otherwise normal run. I might be on the way back.

In other news my wife has the same bug I had and is pissed off. She should've listened to Keen's and Steve's advice and stayed away from me

Work-out question, but it pertains to mile training, not longer stuff.

A friend of mine working with a remote coach was given this work-out to be done on a Tuesday, mile race on Saturday - 5x800 @ mile pace with 1:20 to 1:40 rest.

This is similar to a work-out prescribed to me in the past.  I questioned it then and I question it now.  What do you all think?

Kimba - It's hard to say without knowing the context. Is your friend elite or sub elite or just super fast? Because at that level the cards are played differently. What kind of volume of fast running are they doing in their workouts?

                      I was recently training for a 1500 and the fast segment was around 3km, something like 5x400 @ 800 + 5x200 @ 400.

If they're used to run 4000m as the fast segment volume it might be doable. It sounds very tough though.

                        She's a good runner, but not elite.  She's probably doing about 30 miles/week, recent 5k 19:10, lifetime PR 18:10.  Mile PR 5:15.

It largely depends on what she's been doing lately.

I could see this being appropriate if she's been doing a lot of workouts with 4km+ total fast segments and she's completed a similar workout a few weeks ago with longer rests, like 5x800 @ mile with 2:30 rests or maybe 7x600 with 2 minute rests?

My point being, is this similar to what she's been doing? Or is it a big jump from that. That is largely what IMHO determines whether or not it could be a good workout to do now.

I've learned over time that there's a huge variety in terms of what different runners can do during training due to their different recovery abilities.

For what is worth, for my level of fitness (mind you I'm at a very similar fitness around 5:15 mile for a 4:54 1500), that workout would be too much. Both in volume, but especially with the ridiculously short recovery.

For my workouts during the 1500m block the coach was prescribing me usually 3000m worth of fast running and the recovery times were the same duration of the fast run. So for a 2:40 800 I'd rest 2:40 as well.

I don't know exactly what she's been doing.  I don't think the overall volume is what I question; I question doing so many 800s at such a fast pace so close to a race.  It's like doing 5 time trials in one work-out, a few days prior to the race.  Like, maybe do an 800 at mile pace and then some shorter repeats faster for turn-over to work speed, or do 800s but at a slower pace for strength.   I think one of Daniel's tenets is to do the least amount of work possible to get the benefit from the work-out.   I'm not sure the goal of multiple fast 800s with short rest, especially close to a race.

                            800m:  2:20.3 (2015) | 1 Mile:  5:13 (2016) | 5K: 18:32 (2010) | 10km: 39:55 (2012) HM: 1:28 (2013)

Kimba - I don't see any issue with the 5x 800 part on higher mileage (might be too much at 30 mpw) AND farther from the race, but to me the recovery isn't near long enough. Then again, I'm not a miler and that short-distance focus could be the crux of the thing. I'd take all the recovery I feel I need after anything at mile effort -1:20-40 is what I'd take for 400m Reps. At any mileage that's a big workout just a few days pre-race.

Brew - Even I could get an altitude-training boost if I raced below sea level! And it would be nice to actually run a race with humidity low enough that my sweat would actually evaporate and help cool me. *strokes beard in deep thought*

With Houston sold out some decisions are simplified. Cowtown (March 1) looks to be my best option for multiple reasons - it's the fastest course with a reasonable drive (not by much), is early enough the weather should be good, and should give me a decent amount of time to recover some and still get in a good, though slightly abbreviated, cycle. It's also the week before my anniversary, so I wouldn't have to worry about that and my running getting in each other's way!

Kimba - Ah, I had missed that bit about being Tuesday and there's a Saturday race.

I agree with you, it's completely nonsensical. She should be doing a sharpener, maybe 5x400 @ mile just to get the legs going.
