Reality Show "Reality" (Read 524 times)

Ultra Cowboy

I've come to the conclusion that Reality show is a term that means:  "A very heavily edited Situation Comedy where individuals play a character by the same name, with a flexible script that allows improvisation."

Now I don't get so peeved when I watch Duck Dynasty...

        Yeah, pretty much.

I've talked to people who have worked in reality TV and though specific practices will vary greatly between shows, overall reality shows are much more highly scripted and edited than their producers would like people to believe.

I want to believe that competition-type shows (I really like Project Runway and Top Chef) aren't quite as bad, but that is just wishful thinking on my part and not based on actual knowledge.

1958:  Quiz shows are found to be fake.  Scandal ensues, leading to Congressional hearings.

2013:  Reality shows are found to be fake.  America utters a collective, "meh, so what."

I am so glad you posted this. I had the exact same thought when I saw the Storage Wars reference.

My DH was very disappointed when I told him that Storage Wars wasn't real. Poor guy. Big grin

I think your description of a reality show is spot on.  You might need to add the caveat that "and if the producer doesn't think that the heavily edited and scripted content is interesting enough, they have the option of creating situations that will make it more interesting".  Like adding valuable items to the lockers in storage wars.

My feeling is the only difference between "reality" shows and the non-"reality" ones is that the former costs far less to produce. Thus, the networks love them. They don't have to pay for actors, writers, designers, or any of the other costs related to standard TV production.

                      Current PRs:

I'm sure that some of the items in the lockers on Storage Wars are planted there by the show, but I watch it anyways.  It is entertaining.

Just like Mantracker.  How come he never catches these people on the first day, but always around 4 Km from the finish line?

Extreme Home Makeover came in and took care of a deserving family in our small town a few years back.  One of my students' dad is a cabinet maker, and chipped in.  Oh, he had some great stories, the gist of which were, yes, it's pretty fake.

For instance, the guy that hosts it - Ty, I think his name is?  My student's dad said that they'd start work in the morning, and hours later, Ty would show up, get out of the car, literally bend down, grab some dirt and rub it on his jeans, someone would hand him a tool and they'd ask all the people who really were building the house to clear out so they could shoot some footage.  In one instance, the nail gun he (or maybe it was the woman, can't remember her name) was using didn't even have any nails in it.

That said, "fake" or not, the experience was very good for our community, logistical annoyances aside.  It was really cool to see all the businesses pulling together and everyone getting excited to help this family out.  And it is a pretty nice house.  I can see it from one of my running routes (though I don't go right in front of it).

Don't ruin Mantracker for me.  I always hoped that they just didn't air the dopes who got caught 4m in or the topography funneled them close toward the end.
