Did you win a prize ?

Flavio your Kiwi humor game is big

I weighed the Next % at 7oz. My Takumi Sens are 6.4oz and look like baby shoes beside the Nike. Polar opposites  with the Takumi Sens old school flats with minimal cushioning.

Couldn't resist a quick test trial down my drive and back in the dark. They feel amazing.

$250 and a pair of shoes!

Watson - the 1:12 was in Dunedin.  It was a loop course with a punisher of a hill in the second km and another one a bit later on too.  I reckon probably equivalent to high 1:11's on the flat.

Piwi: I just got the Next% in the same color as you did. They feel great just walking around. I agree with Mark: they are legal so no need to feel bad about wearing them.

            RIP Milkman

Mark - congrats on a great run! I think you know where I stand on this. You can consider whatever you want, but a half marathon that measures almost a tenth of mile short and is 700+ feet straight downhill (it's not like it had up hills to combat it) is not even close to a legit PB. That's more like a 1:12 on a legit course. I'd be even more wary of counting it given you broke the magical 1:10 number. It also looks like almost everyone measured right around that 13.04 to 13.05 mark, which should be about 13.15 or so on a legit certified half marathon course.

But again, it's your personal number, so count whatever you want!

Zebano - I have been battling some weird heel issue now for over 7 months. Some days it's better, some it's worse. Eccentric heel drops seem to be the key. What else have you been doing? Also, have you looked into the Strasburg sock? Think it's meant more for PF but can help with generic heel pain. It's a bit hard to get used to the first few nights but then it's okay.

Piwi - that's absurd on the shoes. It's just old timers who are upset with new technology. I think there was legit concern a few years ago, but now that they've been approved by racing bodies, I don't know how anyone can complain. Wear them and be proud of what you run.

Ran my first (very short) tempo in seven months on Monday.  Glutes & hamstrings have been a bit sore & heavy since then, but they don’t feel injured.  Groin still occasionally sore.  Perhaps as a carryover from the tempo, my other park runs were 5-10 sec/mile faster than usual.

                    Sun - off

                    Mon - 7.2 miles in park including 1.5 @ 6:48

                    Tues - 9.1-11 easy (1:39) on treadmill

                    Weds - 9.4 in park @ 8:30

                    Fri - 14 in park @ 8:28

                    Sat - 9.1-11 easy (1:40) on treadmill

                    Total - 48.8-52.6 miles worth of time/effort, about 7 hours 40 minutes

YTD average - probably 47-53 mpw

Ok my time trial went amazing.

I'm 53 today and decided to do a 10k time trial in my new Next %. I got up at 5.30am and had a coffee and read your nice comments which gave me a good boost.

It was fine and cold outside around 6c 43F so I opted for a shirt and gloves.

I did a 3km warmup and could feel the amazing bounce in the shoes.

I got back home and prepared to start the time trial. I had a route which looped around the local neighborhoods and finished at my place. It was all flat and mostly asphalt or footpath. Been Sunday morning there was very little traffic so I was able to mostly stay on the roads.

My last 10k tt was in February in Christchurch where I ran 3.52/km so I was hoping for around 3.48/km with the new shoes and improved fitness.

Off I went in the dark so it was hard to tell pace but I went by feel and 3.40/km at 1k. Ok that's way too fast so dial it back and 2kms comes up at 3.47.

The 3rd km came in at 3.43 and I was thinking I've got to dial this back but each subsequent km came in around 3.45 and I was gaining confidence the further in I got.

With 1km to go I was able to kick and saw 3.30 pace on my watch. I heard the beep at 10k and thought ok keep going for 20m but realized I had gone 140m over by the time I stopped it.

                        37.43 for 10.14 kms or 37.21 for 10.04kms

The shoes were amazing and I think very beneficial for someone my age with ankles that don't bounce anymore 😳.

I'm going to have to put up the age grade time so Jmac has something to beat

Piwi - well done on the TT, excellent result from the training you've put in over the last few months and very promising for your HM.  Glad you enjoyed the shoes and looks like the weather was ideal too.

James - another good week and hopefully you can build on that tempo effort.

Me - thanks for the support all, PB or not, I ran as well as ever out there and thoroughly enjoyed it.  RR to come and hopefully some pics too when I get around to it.  A few things I learned though:

                          • I definitely run better on lower mileage / higher intensity. Those 120km marathon weeks last year broke me, but 90-100km seems like my sweet spot.
                          • Nutrition makes a big difference to your training. Cutting out most alcohol and sometimes having a banana before key workouts had me hitting some great sessions.
                          • My pacing in this race was nuts. I mean, I’ve always run best when I’ve managed to lock a rhythm in, but 18 of the 21km were between 3:18 and 3:22. First and last were bit quicker (3:15 / 3:07), and there was one at 3:26 late in the race.

Wow, can I request that if I ever run a PB again that we hold off for 24 hours before explaining why it doesn't count?

Mark - Congratulations again, great time sealed with a win against what looks like a pretty good field.  I'm not surprised that it measured short, there are tons of blackspots for GPS around there.  Sounds like it was properly measured.  If anyone asks you what the fastest time you've done in a race is the answer is 1:09:41 (don't follow up with a "but..." - there's plenty of others who can do that).  It's also a lot faster than your previous best.

piwi - Magnificent, so fast.  Based on your last km and the fact that you did this solo, you can probably go even faster.  What's your goal for the HM in light of this result?  I'm going to try and get some cheat shoes that work for me today - I think anyone telling you the time doesn't count in those shoes requires a 2 word reply.  Edit:  Got the Endorphin Pros and tried them over 200 metres or so at the shop.  Fit nicely and feel amazing.  Slightly heavier than the Vaporflies but WAY lighter than my training shoes (Asics Kayanos and GT2000).

James - Another good week.  You've built a big foundation so you should cope well with slowly adding in some speed.  I love your dog!

zebano - That sucks, hope it comes right soon.

me - my biggest week of volume ever and I'm feeling fine with no obvious fatigue.  I know I can expect it to gradually build up but so far so good.  Yesterday was my longest run with a good chunk of quality and the first time I tried some gels.  I took one just before each increase in pace for 3 in total.  I used darkwave's pinning method for 2 and used the small inner pocket in my shorts for the third and it mostly worked well.  When I grabbed the first I noticed I'd lost one but my first hour is an out and back to my house to grab my Endura drink from the front door so I was lucky enough to find it 1km from my house.  I'd already formulated a new plan of when to take the second and final gel by then so it was nice to have the bonus third.  I used Endura cola flavour and they're not overly pleasant but not awful either.  My stomach handled them fine.  As for whether they had an impact...well I had a great run and finished feeling strong and comfortable with 4 of the last 6km at 10-15 seconds faster than target marathon pace so it seems they did.  I'm also in good shape and the conditions were perfect so I'd say it was a combination.  I felt a little flat in the first hour and at 16km I thought my legs were too tired so I expected a fade or crash but it never came.  I think a lot of it is an annoying inner voice that I eventually told to shut up - when I asked myself logically how I felt, the answer was fine.  My legs were obviously tired at the end but I didn't get close to emptying the well and recovered quite fast.

                                100% agree with that.

Piwi - Huge Congrats!  I was going to say sub 38 or bust yesterday, but thought it might put you under pressure.    Very pleased for you and looking forward to seeing what you can do at the half. 👍
