The Waltons aka Advanced Half Marathon Training Thread - 2022 edition (Read 444 times)

Fred - the 97.00 was a total (but amusing) coincidence.  I did an extra loop around my street to get my long run over 2 hours.  Anyways nice week as well.  The reasons I was against merging the threads last time the discussion came up were two fold.  First, I think it'll end up with too many people... it's hard enough to keep track of this thread at times let alone if there are twice as many people, and that can cause people to lose interest.  Second was just the tone difference.  Us Waltons are pretty friendly and inclusive over here.  The marathon thread, while often supportive, can also get shouty at times and has occasionally gotten nasty.  Again, that sort of environment tends to mean you end up losing people.

Hashiritai - nice work.  Are you running National 10k Champs?  They are down in the Hutt this year.  I'm planning to come down.

Corey - welcome back!  Who are you planning to use for your coaching?

Very much agree with this, esp. the part in bold.  Have to ask, now, what a "Walton" is.

Apparently it means we don't shout at each other and are generally nice.

Those are exactly the reasons why I would revive this thread if ever I got rid of my plague of injuries, came back and saw, that it had passed away. Plus someone changed the title of the thread so old(er) folks like me, trying to break the age-graded equivalent of 1:30, feel even more welcome.

Stay injury free and have fun!

"Waltons" is a US cultural reference - The Waltons - Wikipedia.  I've never watched the show, but apparently it was a very gentle, suitable for all ages TV show.

I actually think we should have two training threads, one entitled "the Competitive Jerks" (I mean this as a hat tip to the old "Competitive Jerks" training thread on RunnersWorld, and not as an attack on any thread participant), and the other entitled "the Waltons."

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

This makes good sense to me.  I think people would naturally self-select into one or the other, or in some cases both.

Corey good to see you back from Guam. That must have been a cool experience.

Josh bugger on the injuries !

Hash yeah cold water isn't great for suppleness in a 50 year old body combined with a heavy full wetsuit.

Water temp here is around 15c so not terrible. If it's a light wind sunny day, it helps.

Fred I used to watch the Waltons as a kid. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it as we are of a similar age

Mark one of my running buddies follows the ultra scene and mentioned Ruth Croft. I will have to check YouTube for some footage.

Mark - Yeah, planning to run it. Just about to start a sub-38min training block, so we’ll see how that goes

Josh - The name change from “Sub-90” was definitely a good idea. Injuries suck, eh?

Josh - good to see you are still around!! But bummer on the injuries.

Hashiritai - nice! I'm hoping they make it a nice fast course.  For some reason race directors for Champs events always feel the need to throw in a few quite technical sharp turns or a hill (or, when it was in Cambridge, a technical turn at the top of a hill).  I guess in Wellington the risk is always that we get a windy day but fingers crossed.

Hash I feel that you and I are of similar age and ability. I'm not sure I'm sub 40 right now but I generally get there after around 8 weeks or more of 80kms per week.

Do you wear the new carbon race shoes ? I got some Next % last year and smashed a 10k time trial in them. They felt very beneficial for my old legs.

Started feeling sick again today so no running. I might have been a bit premature about overcoming that bug.

Fred - I definitely think, given how these threads operate, that the numbers do need to be keep to a manageable level. One of the issues seems to be that most people who are training for a half also seem to be training for a full, thus the threads started to merge.

Mark - For me it'll be less about the time, and more about keeping ahead of the 4-5 fellow club members who are nipping at my heels for a place in the MM50 A team for NRR. I'm currently comfortably 5th, but I need to lay down some good 10km times to secure that (and possibly move up a place or two).

Piwi - I'm averaging 350km (ish) for the past 3 months (217mi for our non-metric friends out there), which is the most monthly mileage I've ever had under my belt. I'm hoping that with some targeted training now, that that will start to pay off. I do have a couple pairs of Carbon Hokas (Carbon X and Rocket X) which feel really comfortable. I don't train in them much, and will save them for the big races.

Corey - Welcome back. Will be interesting to hear how you choose your coach.

                        Waltons ThreadLord

Waltons - I'm aware of the show, though I rarely watched it.  Given the multi-national nature of this thread, I wasn't sure whether there was another meaning attached to the term.  I understand why it's being applied here in the context explained to me.  I like a thread that's not shouty.

Piwi - Sorry to hear you're not feeling well again.  I go some Saucony carbon shoes and have run faster in them, so now I don't know how much of my speed increase is the shoes and how much is from my training.  I'll choose to believe it's mostly training with an assist from the shoes.

Mark - Wellington sounds like the Jersey shore:  always a risk of a windy day coming along go make a race more difficult.

DW - Not a bad idea on the thread names.  I got a smile from "Competitive Jerks" and I get your reference.

Josh - I hope you get free of the injury bug.

4¼ miles for me this morning and while I did beat the rain, it's so humid outside that I'm not sure it mattered much.  I got an email from the organizers of my race next Monday in which they said, among other things, "The weather...is looking ideal for the race."  I'm not sure in what world 72º (22C) is ideal for a 4-mile race.  Maybe for the people who aren't actually racing it.....

                          5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 38:55 (11/23); 10k 49:24 (10/22);

Why hasn't our thread title changed to reference the Waltons yet?  =)

Nice weeks guys. Hash I hope you get your sub 38, your training has been going exceedingly well so you may surprise yourself.

                            Corey - welcome back

Fred - I gotta say I'm happy to see someone using the RA reporting feature instead of exporting from strava ! Nice week. It always makes sense to include recoveries in your summaries as otherwise you're just setting yourself up for unrealistic race expectations.

I had a solid but unspectacular week. Struggled with my Tuesday speed work but by Friday the legs were starting to come around. Sabotaged myself by going to a party with a couple Fenchmen on Saturday who started pushing shots and I ended up sicker than I've been since college on Sunday and missed my long run. =(  I think I'm going into a sober until Oct 2 phase here after that as I'm still faintly ill just thinking about alcohol.

Solid week, wish I got the long run in even just easy but I tried and my body said this is a bad idea. I was very very happy with the cruise miles as the legs just kept feeling better and better and the HR stayed under control even on the last rep. Maybe my fitness is rebounding.

A few weeks ago I took a little vacation with DW and didn't run much (50 miles total) and was (gloriously) away from digital communication devices.
The next couple weeks (84 & 91 miles) my boss (the only other person at the company who can do what I do) was busy sailing from Denmark to the US and the resulting double workload kept me busy.
I also attended an architecture conference in Chicago for work and was able to take advantage of the very flat terrain and better-than-Oklahoma weather to log some miles.

A few weeks ago I took a little vacation with DW and didn't run much (50 miles total) and was (gloriously) away from digital communication devices.

Mr. Consistency returns! Way to crush the miles. Are you following the candidates tournament?  I was really hoping Ding was ready for the big time but it's hard to argue against Nepo when he's playing this well.
