Forums >General Running>My son is nine, has been complaining about pain in his knee for a long time!
Hello,
My son is nine years old and has been complaining about pain in his knees for about a year now. After multiple trips to our family Doctor, his best advice was that it was just growing pains. We did X-Rays which he said came out completely normal. This does not quite add up to me as he does not have the regular associated hunger and growth, which I know I had!
He loves to play soccer and has been doing so for about 4 years now, but has never experience these pains until the last year or so.
Someone please give me some good advice!

Google search....
I spent 10+ years googling and searching through websites like "wrongdiagnosis.com" until I found the answer to my sons symtoms. The doctors could not find the answers. It was like finding a needle in a haystack.
Take notes of ANY and ALL symptoms that he has.
FWIW, one of my son's symptoms included knee pain. I seriously doubt my son's diagnosis is the same as your son is experiencing since there were only a few known cases of his condition in the USA. But, we never liked the diagnosis we received from the doctors over the first 14 years of his life.

No real advice, by my pediatrician had a student once and he told that student to always listen to the parents. They usually know if something is wrong. Keep at it and good luck.
Have you considered taking him to an orthopedic rather than just your family doctor? A specialist may be able to spot something that your pediatrician may be missing...

When my chronic knee pain was mysterious, only an MRI showed what was wrong, the xrays looked normal.

If you don' t mind showing, what did it show?

I second the recommendation to get a second opinion (hmm too many seconds, there). From a real pediatrician.
Also, how is his general growth - is he on his growth curve for height and weight over the last year?

I second the advice to see specialist, orthopedic / sports medicine. My daughter's knee pain turned out to be Lyme's disease (which she apparently had for at least six months based on symptoms she was experiencing). Sports medicine Specialist did MRI of knee, xray and ran bloodworK. PCP did none of this.

Osgood-Schlatters is a possibility. I was diagnosed with it, back in the day.

you may need to just keep going back to the doctors and have them look for something else, or try different doctors. i've had to go back dozens of times to have them finally diagnose something that after reading the description, was exactly what i'd been saying all along.

My thought was Lyme disease too. Don't discount it even if you don't live in an endemic area - my son got it while we were living in probably one of the most low-risk areas of the country. Ticks are everywhere.
I assume he's been checked for JA?
This is what they said I had starting around age 11. Lasted 2-3 years and threw all sorts of havoc my way. Finally at 14 I couldn't even straighten my right leg without excruciating pain. Orthopedist said the blood had stopped flowing under my kneecap so they went in and drilled 6 holes. Didn't help.
Finally at 16 I had a sports chiropractor suggest that I had a tender spot under my knee cap that was being rubbed and he put me in a brace that held my kneecap to the side and allowed this spot to heal. Did the trick!
12 years later and I still have issues due to muscle imbalances in that knee/leg.
Long story short, no one knew what was wrong with my knees and their surgical experimentation cost me a high school sports career.
Not really an encouraging story but my advice would be to keep checking with doctors until you find the proper remedy. Good luck!
