Great race and report JMac.  I wonder if I would have similar integrity with a possible gold medal on the line.  I'd like to think I would - I know if I got a PB on a course that was short it wouldn't count for me.  Sounds like very tough conditions too - I do a lot of out and back runs in training and much MUCH prefer the headwind on the way out.

Jmac brother this is really impressive and motivational. Congratulations. Nice race report, thank you for taking the time to share it. You can continue to post here

I have lost my GPS watch. Or rather I misplaced it. Forgot it at the hotel the other day. They will be mailing it to me soon. In the meantime I am just jogging at easy pace. This morning I did my usual run commute. Havent been able to run it all the way for weeks. Today I felt like I could have continued beyond the 7 miles. The only thing I changed was taking the BCAA capsule before the run and not after. I will see if it keeps me going tomorrow again. Felt great though!

DPS - big week and super fast runs too.

I keep noticing you run faster than Luke Humphrey, but then I remind myself everyone is different (Also he’s running big miles).

Piwi - I’ll settle with not injuring my back when I sneeze too hard LOL

Jmac - That was a great race execution. There’s no way to know if the leader knew about the rule to stay on the right.

A lot of the local races have cones/tapes splitting the 2 sides of the road.

Paul - Jmac, DPS and Mark are the biggest sandbaggers haha. I’m the opposite, I always need somebody else telling me off my delusions of grandeur.

Keen - huge week, you are a machine.

GluteForce - Hey, it's good to see you around. You seem to be back on track, when are you racing next?

        PRs: 1500 4:54.1 2019 - 5K 17:53 2023 - 10K 37:55 2023 - HM 1:21:59 2021

Haha delusional I know that feeling.

I dont race anymore I am a hobby jogger now, officially. I let others race in my place. Like I really enjoyed watching the ironman in Hawaii. Two Germans won. Good stuff, crazy people.

But to be honest I hope I will get back into race shape one day. I am k-taping the calf now. It still hurts occasionally. I have so much bloody hair on my calves that it hurts when I rip the strips off. It really hurts like Kiwi pain. I foam roal occasionally too. I could be fit if I wasnt such a lazy bastard.

JMac - Can you add my race to the first page - Santa to the Sea HM in Oxnard, CA on December 8th - Not sure yet of goal, let's say 1:23:00.

              Hi,

I just stumbled onto this group as I ponder my second 1/2 marathon attempt.  Is there a formal process for joining the group?  Or do you just start posting to get included?

              Thanks!

                Hi Kimba (and welcome!).

Feel free to give us a bit of an intro - background, how long you've been running, current goals etc.  The other thing that helps a lot is posting your weekly training here (which most of us do at the end of each week).  There are some pretty experienced runners on here who often have helpful tips.

I attached my PRs into my signature.  I'm a 44 year old female from New England who started running seriously in 2008.  Prior to that I was a soccer player and ran just to stay in shape in the off season.  I didn't know much about running at first, just knew I liked it.  Then I joined a club with a coach and started chasing times.  I've messed around with many distances and eventually determined that I preferred and was best at shorter distances like the 800m and the mile.  I spent a few years chasing times in those events on the indoor track.  Since 2016 I've been a little spotty - major surgery in Oct 2016, back to running summer 2017 during which time I ran an 18:43 5K and 5:15 mile.  Then injured twice starting in Fall 2018 to March 2019, then again August 2019 until beginning of October 2019.  I'm just back to raising my mileage again now.  Looking forward to going back to longer distances for a bit to regain any lost strength, then if I'm not too old, I'd love to hit the track again!  Not sure what to expect for a 1/2 marathon time since last time I ran it was 7 years ago, but looking forward to the work.  And looking forward to sharing in this group!

                  RIP Milkman

Kimba - always great to have new runners! We love having new folks, please stick around and continue to post as you build up your mileage.

Flavio - DPS hasn't earned the sandbag title yet, but we shall see. His potential is clearly sub 1:15 half.

MJ - Thank you! Also YOU need to continue to post here, even when not running. We need your humor at all times

Mark - that's interesting, do you guys not have out and back courses? I think with all of those, generally the courses are certified with a center line, mainly because when you turn around, there will still be folks going "out" and you can't run into them.

Piwi - what a disaster of a 3rd quarter that was last night, jeez.

Kimba welcome those are some nice PRs. 44 is not too old. I started at 42 in 2010. I think you can still perform well in your 40s.

JMac - strangely, there's not a lot of out and back courses.  The only two straight out and back courses I can think of are Waterfront HM and Wellington.  They have full road closures, and generally pretty strict directions to keep to the correct side of the course (with plenty of marking / road cones to make it super obvious).  If anyone cut the course, I'm sure other runners (or marshalls) would notice and call them out - it would be very obvious.  The smaller races don't tend to get road closures, so measurement is fairly straightforward (although I'm pretty sure a lot of race directors cut corners on these and measure it with a GPS watch).

There's one or two race directors around that are notorious for being slack and most really serious runners just avoid their races.

MickJogger - I’m the resident expert in calf injuries, having spent 26 weeks in 2016 alone injured.

In summary, the usual suspects are poor ankle dorsiflexion and more importantly weak glutes/hamstrings/lower back.

The the back + glutei + hamstring do their work they hold your weight and the calf has almost nothing to do.

But when you sit in front of the computer 10-12 hours a day the glutes become too weak and lazy to carry the weight.

As such, all that weight now has to be carried on the calves which causes a lot of tension, and eventually pain.

Short term solutions are foam rolling the calves and the glutes.

Long term solution is full body strength training. As you get stronger the issue greatly diminishes. I’ve experienced that first hand since the start of 2017.

Kimba - welcome aboard. I’m also a fan of the shorter races, having recently trained 3 months for a 1500m race.

User Darkwave is also a female around your age who’s a fan of mile races, having raced several this year.

I'm interested in seeing your training for the half, what kind of mileage are you running weekly as of late?

                                Kimba - Welcome!

JMac - The forecast is pretty much unchanged from earlier - nicely cool, low wind, partly cloudy. Going for 1:25 seems a bit intimidating to me right now because it's so much faster than my PR. But then again, that was a LOT of miles ago and the way I'm running sure says that it should be doable so I'm certainly going for it!
