Wanting to Run. Workout Change. (Read 805 times)

For that past few months I have been working out(1 hour workouts with leg weights) to Billy Blanks Tae Bo DvD's(M-W-F). I have had

some great successwith these DvD's. I have dropped 27 Lbs and feel fantastic. Also 1 Year ago(+1 month) I quit smoking.

I also do some strength training for upper body on T-T-S (Chest,Abs,Legs) My diet is Lean meats Chicken breast,Turkey(ground and breast) and Fish along with 4-7 pieces of fruit a day and 3-5 servingsof vegtables , Yogurt at times, Otameal with fruit in morning (95% of the time,

    Cream of Wheat 5%).

I want to switch from doing the cardio DvD's to running. I have seen a "Couch to 5k" on the net. Would you suggest this routine for

someone like me or something different? Perhaps I should drop more pounds or Pack on a little muscle?

If you want to run, then run.

There is a C25K group here on RA; it's a well known program and it works. Be sure you start with a proper pair of running shoes. It's not more expensive to get fitted at a proper running store and it will help.

Congrats on quitting that smoking habit.  At 5'6" 150 lbs I don't think weight is an issue.  That C25K is a good program to get runners in shape for their first race.  If it feels too easy  (since you already do exercise regularly) there are other programs, One hour runner is in the same group mentioned by Meg, should get you to a 10K finish easily.

Modified to Add.  Looks like the One Hour runner program is no longer available on Cool running.  But I am sure someone here has the program if you are interested.

          Thank you guys! (or gals).

I have already went to the shoe store and bought a nice pair of running shoes. I got Saucony Ride 4 in orange. I actually tried on alot of different shoes while I was there and these felt the best and the lady suggested I should stick with them. I walk in them now and its like wearing clouds compared to my Sketchers I wear casually. She said they are a Neutral shoe. I told her I did a water test on my foot before I showed up that showed I have a regular - high arch foot. Need to run in them for a while to see if I'm a under or over Pronator yet.

As for the weight issue I'm going to hold off on the C25K program for a little bit and try to drop down to 143. I saw this article on the net about a dr who said that a runners weight should be (roughly) 110 LBS for the first 5 feet and for every inch after add 5.5 LBS. This would put me at 143 for 5' 6". Not that I want to follow that as a hard rule but MAN! I would love to be down to 145( or less) ,  that's 6 more pounds I don't have to carry. Would make my pants fit better too LOL!

Anyway Thanks again guys! I will start the C25k Program when I'm ready and I will read that One Hour Runner program when I find it. In the meantime I will read these forums for different ideas and stuff.

I can totally recommend the C25K program, or really any slow build up using a run/walk plan. It has totally changed my life by gently introducing me into running and now I can't imagine ever wanting to stop.

I think that there is no time like the present to start running and 150lbs is a non-issue. I started running at 200lbs at 5'6" 3 years ago and have never had any real time off due to injury. I now weigh around 150lbs and happily run daily.  So download the podcast and start tomorrow!

One day I decided I wanted to become a runner, so I did.

Start.  Just start.  There is no reason to wait 6 lbs to start.  If I had waited until I was at the weight calculated by that formula I would have NEVER started.

Yeah.  Just start running.   If you are worried, you can always walk/run and work your way in.

Here's a free starter plan too for runners.

I will probably never reach the weight calculated by that formula, and I've seen races won by guys who are above that weight. 176lbs 6' would be pretty heavy for a high level runner - no offence to whoever wrote that article, but that formula seems pretty much useless.

Running is natural. Start slow, keep doing it.
