NYC Runner Killed on evening run (Read 496 times)

This is a scary story for any female runner: http://nypost.com/2016/08/03/jogger-murdered-after-evening-run-in-queens/
    Be safe out there, ladies!

I just read that she fought long and hard enough that she was able to bite her attacker so hard she broke her teeth.  Good for her!!!!  Too bad she wasn't carrying some pepper spray or something like Tiger Claws.  But then those are most likely illegal in NYC.

        Wow, that's crazy. Poor girl.

The cops aren't ready to say these murders are related, but it's quite a coincidence...  http://nypost.com/2016/08/08/nyc-google-manager-killed-on-jog-in-massachusetts/

          Excerpt:

A New York City woman was killed — and possibly set on fire after a sexual assault — while jogging in Massachusetts less than a week after a runner was murdered in Queens, according to reports Monday.

Vanessa Marcotte, a pretty, 27-year-old Google account manager, was visiting her mom in Princeton, Massachusetts, on Sunday, when she left for a workout around 1 p.m. and never came back, ABC News reported.

Her body was found in woods about half a mile from her mother’s home at 8:20 p.m. that night, police told the station.

Good thing she was pretty or it wouldn't have been newsworthy.

Interesting that she was visiting her mom in MA, so it's not like she had an established routine. Sounds like a crime of opportunity.

If they were related maybe they should get the BAU team from Criminal minds on the case

                  My thoughts exactly...

Princeton MA is 3 hrs away from Queens; not sure if there's any lead there.  But it does underscore how just being a female is risky.

Not running for my health, but in spite of it.

I think the reporter was reaching for similarities between the two crimes.

A suspect is now in custody for the murder of Queens, New York, jogger Karina Vetrano in August 2016.

The alleged suspect is described as being a man in his 20s, living in East New York, and has been a person of interest in the case for a few months, ABC reported early Sunday. Later in the day, the NYPD held a press conference where they identified the suspect as Chanel Lewis, 20.

At the press conference, police said that they do not believe that Lewis knew Vetrano prior to her disappearance. They said he had no prior criminal history aside from some summonses. According to police, Lewis gave a DNA swab to authorities after an interview on Feb. 2. His DNA allegedly matched with DNA found on Vetrano. He has been booked on murder and sexual assault charges, according to police. It is not known how he pleads against the charges or if he has retained an attorney.

                        Thanks for the update.
