55 YO and down to 19:06 on my quest for sub 19 min race. Been running for 40+ years ran fast times back in the day 1970 -74 in HS and have been racing again the last three years after not really racing from when I was 30 YO a 22 year racing break. I mean racing 3 X a week in HS and then many many races in College and then for 8 years after with marathons and such. I just said no more racing but kept on running everyday. But in 2008 jumped into a 5k and ran 22:55 on a hot day and said it is time to get back into the game of racing. So I dropped 60 pounds 6 feet tall and 208 was well too fat and now at 150 my 1/2 marathon time is 1:31::04 and this year three 5ks 19:17  19:57 after a two week layoff from a dog bit and then last sunday my 19:06. IIt will happen  My first mile has been now in the 5:46 range and the second is the issue .. Last Sunday went out on an uphill course for the first mile in 5:46 and yes I am strong enough to go out that fast my 400 times in training are sub 70 seconds and have been running upwards of 95 miles a week for the past 18 months and yes mile two was a stinko 6:26 but came back on mile 3 in 6:14 with 30 something to finish....  Soon baby soon I feel it maybe in Santa Monica in December at the Christmas run....

Okay, I'll be the first one to point out that 5:46 is sub-18 pace. I'm not sure what you mean by 'strong enough to go out that fast' but the  evidence you provide suggests otherwise! I suspect that if you went out closer to 6:05-6:10 pace you'd crush 19.

Good luck with your next race.

Goal: Age grade over 80% on a certified course.

Paragraph breaks: they're not just for breakfast anymore.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.
