Failed cholesterol and triglycerides numbers (Read 1084 times)

Roll eyes  A voice of reason:

Your numbers really don't look that bad. Most of the chatter about cholesterol is about one thing; get as many people on statin drugs to make as much money for Big Pharma as possible, without too many people dropping dead (dead people don't generate obscene profits).

Several years ago, my numbers got real bad. Triglycerides in the low 700s, total cholesterol above 300, HDL about 35. My doctor hounded me to go on statins, but refused to run a full thyroid panel (had symptoms pointing towards hypothyroidism for about 20 years). Finally I got diagnosed and treated for my hypothyroidism and and my numbers are now triglycerides below 300, cholesterol less than 230 and I'm happy.

This is what I've learned in my quest for regain my health.

First: cholesterol isn't the boogeyman it's been made out to be. Think about it for a moment....cholesterol is needed by the body to build/rebuild the cells of your body (think of it as the concrete of our bodies. It's also the building blocks that our glands (including the skin) synthesize hormones  The body conserves cholesterol. The liver actively recycles cholesterol.

Triglycerides are a serious problem above 230. Triglycerides 230 and below is fine for the most part.

The real culprit is oxidative stress, especially of the arterial walls. Collagen is the rebar of our cells.  As rebar makes concrete stronger and more flexible, collagen reenforces the walls of our cells, and this includes the arterial walls. Vitamin C is necessary for the body to synthesize collagen, and is also a powerful antioxidant. Oxidative stress can deplete our bodies levels of vitamin c to the point our bodies can no longer synthesize sufficient collagen, the arterial walls become weakened, and they body must keep the walls reenforced, but without sufficient collagen, it must resort to other means. So, what to do? eliminate as much oxidative stress, insure a sufficient intake of vitamin C (>=3 grams/day) and other antioxidants.

Since cholesterol is the basic building block of our bodies, than the body must transport cholesterol to the site it is trying to repair/rebuild itself (elevated serum cholesterol), so anytime you have torn down your body (like interval training, strength and endurance training) you tear down muscles induce inflammation, both of which increases the bodies need for cholesterol at those sites.

Having your cholesterol levels down where the pushers of statin drugs want will increase, not decrease your risk of cardiac disease, cancer, autoimmune disease, and a plethora of unhealthy (but profitable to Big Pharma) conditions. The medical establishment is all about disease management, not health care. Disease is much more profitable than health. If you are sick you need a doctor to manage your disease and poison pills to manage your symptoms. Health and cures are very unprofitable.

The last race I was able to run was the Carlsbad 5000 in 2003 and it felt like I was dragging an anchor the whole 5K. I had to quit running shortly after altogether shortly after that. I am now off of all the psychiatric drugs (usual response of doctors to women complaining of thyroid symptoms that do not fit into THEIR idea of a thyroid condition are antidepressants and antianxiety drugs (both very profitable to Big Pharma). I have worked my way up to walking 25 to 30 miles per week (third week at this distance) and starting walk/run/walk intervals. Today I've racked up my first sub 15 minute/miles in a long time. My goal is sub 10 minute/mile and a sub 30 minute 5K.

What am I saying? Your doctor is right. Work on improving your overall health. Manage your exposure to oxidative stress. Keep your vitamin C intake well above 3 grams/day. Remember the RDA is set to prevent overt disease states not maintain optimum health. Your cat/dog's liver, when healthy will synthesis the body mass equivalent to 10 grams/day of vitamin C (grams, not milligrams) in a healthy human. The key is healthy.

How is this a voice of reason?

And at whom are you rolling your eyes?

And gosh, I thought the reason we address high cholesterol is because it is associated with disease and death.

      amigaHal

no, mostly just to fatten the coffers of Big Pharma. It can be indicative of conditions that need to be addressed. A hint is the liver and pancreas controls cholesterol and triglycerides. High triglycerides, above 230 is much more serious than cholesterol above 200. Hypothyroidism can cause high to very high triglyceride levels and high cholesterol levels, such as my case. Metabolic Syndrome can produce high  triglycerides, look for a high fructose intake (excessive of fruits, high intake of fruit juices, consumption of sodas and sport drinks loaded with sugar, (look for high fructose corn sugar as the main sweetening ingredient), abnormal liver function, high alcohol intake (fructose and ethanol have similar metabolic chains).

Do you have evidence to support these assertions?

I agree that one should eat well, get plenty of exercise, control their weight, and maintain their health so that there is much less likelihood that they will develop conditions that require medication to control.

However, most of what you wrote is far from reason and closer to internet legend conspiracy theory.  Reason is based on logical deduction from facts and data.  Trent asked for facts and data to support your assertions, and so far I have seen none.

BTW, most of the antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and statins prescribed today are now generic.  Evil Big Pharma isn't making anything off them...that's been the case for years, for a lot of them.

I gathered that this is a tough event, but what else is so special about it? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question to all the veterans here, but it took me a long long time to even figure out why "BQ" is "special" when I started lurking around RA, so I'm dumb as a brick...
