Runs in the rain

Cross training is a great way to build endurance with less strain to the ankles. That would be long walks and bicycling. You can try to reduce inflammation by soaking your ankles in icy water after a run. You can also do that with diet. Try to avoid excess salt, meat proteins, sugar and processed foods all of which promote inflammation. Drink lots of water. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables which have anti inflammatories. You may want to consider getting a juicer and drink some fresh vegetable juice. Of course the more weight you lose the less strain on the ankles. Running is not very effective way to lose weight unless you combine it with a better diet. I find that having a large salad or a big bowl of soup satisfies the hunger and these can make low calorie meals.

Long distance runner, what you standin' there for?
