Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2020 (Read 618 times)

    DWave - That's quite the list of maladies from just a single image! I'm certainly glad you're responding to the PT you're already doing, and hopefully that continues to improve. Does any of this change your plans for a marathon this fall? Even if it's just switching from one to another.
    RE: your comment of "treat the patient, not the image" in the other thread is a good one, though I've been on the opposite of that before. When I was 18 and about to move into the college dorms I woke up with my right ankle swolen to the size of a grapefruit and I wasn't able to walk on it at all. Docs thought I somehow wrapped my foot in the sheets overnight and broke my ankle when rolling over - but an x-ray showed nothing wrong. The swelling went down and I limped for a couple weeks, but was fine. This kind of thing happened off-and-on for a few years (occasionally I'd hear/feel a *pop* in that ankle) and I finally got in to a specialist who concluded that I was faking it based on how my symptoms came and went randomly, my ankle seemed completely fine between episodes, and a new x-ray was also clear. I argued that it seemed to me to be a soft tissue problem and he relented into getting me an MRI. I went back to have the MRI reviewed and as soon as he put the image up to see it (he obviously hadn't looked prior) his whole demeanor changed and said "well, that would explain it". Turns out I had a piece of cartilage the size of a tic-tac floating around in my ankle that would occasionally get stuck and mess things up. The piece had torn off thanks to spraining that ankle half-a-dozen times or so playing basketball. Simple arthroscopic procedure to have it removed and I haven't had a single issue with that ankle since.

    Piwi - Yeah, you're definitely knocking on the door of a sub-18. Don't look at HR in absolute values - it needs to be looked at as a percentage of the total or, better yet, percentage of HR Reserve.


    Pretty good week for me, though all easy. I've now had 3-4 really good runs in a row with little to no issues with my low back/hips - perhaps just a bit of a hitch after several miles that's entirely ignorable, but goes away with a quick stop and twisting of my upper body. BEAUTIFUL weather this morning, too! Trying to front-load some miles this week ahead of my HM this weekend. I have zero clue how hard I should be going out for this, so we'll just have to see how things end up.

      Very crazy story about that cartilage fragment.  TBH, that's what I was suspecting my ankle MRI might catch - something like that or a cyst pushing on something.

       

      As for marathons - no marathon for me this fall.  November is simply too close.  I just need to get healthy and decently fit again, and then see what is out there.

        Keen - sounds like great progress in terms of energy levels and how the body is feeling, long may it continue.  No taper madness yet, although 10 days out is generally where things kick off as that's when race day first appears on Metservice's long range weather forecast (so Fri is when things may get interesting).

            Piwi, I've got two twenty minute runs in pain free! I'm trying really hard not to overdo it.

             

            1000km on 1 pair of shoes is amazing durability

            1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

              Zebano that's good news on your knee. I think the Pegasus were done at 800kms but the replacement shoes I got NB Beacon 2s felt terrible. I felt a bit guilty buying more shoes so I persisted with the Beacons until a good deal came up.

                    Piwi, getting shoes that don't work for you is the worst. I still have some NB 1500s with about 150 miles and I just want toss them but I'll use them once a week just because I have them. How is US $72 cheap?

                     

                    We generally don't get amazing end of line shoe sales here.  Around $US 65 is about as cheap as you'll ever get a reasonable running shoe in New Zealand.

                        Mark/Watson I've noticed since covid that Athletes foot and Stirling sports are doing a better job with online deals. I got the Pegasus 36 for $112 delivered from Stirling sports and New Balance fuel cell Rebels from Athletes foot for $119.
