I always read that 1 mile burns on average 100 calories, but for example I ran 9 miles last weekend and my garmin said I burned around 1016. Is that close to correct, or off by a bit or a lot?

1016 / 9 = ~113 cal/mile according to your Garmin. That's within Kentucky windage of the 100 you had as you ballpark. Neither number is accurate or specific...they're ballpark figures. Both are as right as the other one.
Acceptable at a dance, invaluable in a shipwreck.
Well that is about 113 calories a mile, which seems fairly in line with what you are saying. However it is just a rough estimate
When I don't use a heart rate monitor is says I burn about 120 calories a mile. When I do use a heart rate monitor it says I burn about 80 calories a mile. So its not exactly an easy thing to track

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

That figure is based on a 150lb male.
I am a female and weigh 115. I burn about 72 cals per mile average. It bases your cal burn figure mainly taking into account your age, height, weight, sex, pace, distance, and heart rate(if you have a HRM active). But it isn't completely foolproof. Here is my burn numbers from a recent run:
Mile 1: 907 pace, 141 avg HR, 75 cals
Mile 2: 909 pace, 145 avg HR, 78 cals
Mile 3: 903 pace, 148 avg HR, 78 cals
Mile 4: 912 pace, 144 avg HR, 74 cals
Mile 5: 901 pace, 146 avg HR, 74 cals
Mile 6: 916 pace, 145 avg HR, 72 cals
Mile 7: 912 pace, 144 avg HR, 69 cals
Mile 8: 905 pace, 146 avg HR, 69 cals
Mile 9: 907 pace, 140 avg HR, 52 cals
Mile 10: 857 pace, 146 avg HR, 61 cals
Mile 11: 924 pace, 139 avg HR, 48 cals
Mile 12: 929 pace, 139 avg HR, 46 cals
Mile 13: 929 pace, 138 avg HR, 44 cals
Mile 14: 922 pace, 144 avg HR, 56 cals
Mile 15: 958 pace, 141 avg HR, 51 cals
Mile 16: 919 pace, 144 avg HR, 56 cals
Now if everything is equal:
18 cals for 3 secs and 1 HB per minute different?
OR
23 cals different for basically the same distance, pace & HR? Why?
See, not foolproof, even if it is just math.
I do like how you can go in and set your weight, height, age on the garmin. That is nice, I'm not too worried about it, just curious. Myfitnesspal is usually around 25 calories less, and my cardiotrainer app is around 25 less too.
