Sprinting speed to Distance?? (Read 50 times)

    Anyone out there have knowledge of whether a fast sprinter/mid distance athlete could transition to the longer distances or do you think it's just whether that sprinter/mid distance person has the genetics for the long distances?

     

    ie., say a fast 800m runner....could be fast 5k, 10k, HM, Marathoner?

     

    ie., someone with a decent 800m time running nothing but intervals/shorter distances....could develop the aerobic system...

      Yes.  Most likely  mental training vs. physical.   Just having the patience for slow miles.

        It depends on what you think is "good".

        Any 800m runner can run ultras, if they train for them. Can they be as "good"? Maybe. I think for apples to oranges comparisons of performance you need to use the age-grade calculator, and look at the percentage scores.

         

        Genetics? That's nearly irrelevant except for elites. Training matters. Kipchoge is a 3:50 miler AND a 2:01:39 Marathoner. And there are a few freakish people out there, like a guy that went to UCLA who ran like 10.5 100m, 4:00 mile, and 28:00 10k or something like that.

        Some people are bigger, more muscular naturally, and start to slide in performance as the distances get longer (ask me how I know!).

         

        Running just intervals and repeats probably won't do the trick for anything longer than 800m. Despite the training benefits of the Long Run, you need the mental edge of "yeah, I've run 15-20 miles before, 13.1 is no big deal, and 6.2 is a walk in the park".

          Fast twitch and slow twitch are two different things.  Ability at 800m and below generally has little correlation with ability at longer distances.  You see people good at 100/200, 200/400, 400/800, and sometimes 800/1500, but who can you name that was competitive at 800 and anything below, and anything 5000 and above?  I'm sure there are some examples but generally the correlation is low.

           

          Case in point, I tried a lot but never broke 30 in the 200 or 60 in the 400.  2:06 best in the 800, 4:27 in the mile.  But 30:57 in the 10K and 1:09:57 HM.  Never ran a great marathon in that shape but did jog an injured mid-2:28.

            A similar topic was posted 2:00 800m vs 3hr Marathon....and all these distance guys were saying the 800m was far tougher.

             

            I guess being training more as a sprinter in my career, the though of a 3hr marathon or faster to me seems much more like the moon.

             

            I guess we'll see what happens...

              Wow I didn't appreciate what a great runner you are! I see how low your mileage is these days: any chance 2022 will result in more serious training? I'm not trying to recruit you to the marathon thread or anything ...
