Steve - the key thing to remember about those slow recovery runs is that they're actually trying to encourage active recovery but at a slow enough pace that you're not adding fatigue.  I know I've got the pace right for a 30-40 min recovery session, which is normally the day after my long run, because my legs feel like garbage at the start but actually a lot better by the end.

      Piwi Love the Van!

      Jame Nice race Great job!

Watson hope nothing serious, I had a hamstring issue a couple weeks back I think it is related to tight hip flexors as I sit a lot during the day. I've been trying to work on those and haven't had any additional issues "knock on wood".

Flavio glad you made it back to Portugal

      Nice weeks by all !

total bust for me last week was completely unmotivated had all sorts of things come up at work and around the house.

I did get in a good swim so there is that.

      9.22 total miles.

hopefully this week will be a little better

I have my 1 mile race on Friday night Zero expectations, I was hoping to do well, maybe set a PR but that is way out of the question.

hope I can just break the 6 min mark at this point I'll be lucky if I can do that.

Mark - Yep, I'm better at the recovery runs than the "easy" runs.  I've some in the next few days that I can hopefully be closer to the right paces for.

Corey - Good luck for the mile, just enjoy having no expectations!

Corey awesome look forward to it. I've never done a mile race but the thought enters my head. I'm a little scared of sub 5 pace requirements which are almost a sprint for me. I need to go to a track and try and run one 75 sec lap to see how it feels.

Steve Christchurch with a balmy 19 c today ! Hopefully we will be in level 3 next week and you to. Then I can go back to work.

Recovery pace for me is usually around 5.30/km. 8.48/mile but can vary. Today I started nearer 6 min/km.

It doesn't bother me I just enjoy it. It's like a brisk walk.

My heartrate was well under 120 bpm apart from 2 false km readings early on.

If you go by heart rate zones most people probably run easy too fast. For me it's 4.40 to 5.10/km. And that's based off my 1.23.30 half.

piwi - It's hit 21C which is pretty high for August.  Back down to 10C this weekend though.

Dunedin Marathon - Postponed until November 7, I guess they want certainty even though we could potentially be at level 1 by then although probably not.

The new date sucks.  2 weeks before Queenstown.  I don't know what to do about it yet.  I've already entered Queenstown so I'm definitely doing that.  2 races in 13 days is a big injury risk for me.  I guess I could cancel Queenstown but we're going for 3 days and staying at my partners' parents.  If I did race on November 7 I'd probably do Selwyn as it's closer to home.

Should mention that Queenstown isn't a PB course (and November probably not a PB month in most parts of the country for me) - I was really looking for a legit PB attempt race.  Doesn't look like it will be happening this year.

Wow, that's a fun date to pick.  Clashes with National Road Champs (will take some of their elites out), and a few other races that might be too small for them to care about (Nelson, Selwyn).

In my way of thinking, I would prioritise the PB opportunity (which is quite real for you) particularly as it's a new race vs. running a race I've done several times previously.  But for me fast / PB potential courses and new races are big drawcards so you might not have the same priorities.

I'm struggling with the decision over Road Champs vs. Nelson Half a bit.  But on balance I'm leaning towards Nelson Half.

              Road Champs Nelson Half
Reasonable chance of 10k road PB subject to conditions Non-refundable entry and airfares
~1pm race in Nov could be hot Haven't done it before and course looks fast and scenic
Course looks fun and relatively quick Not likely to do another fast half before April next year

Probably the same course next year anyway

              Good family holiday opportunity

Directly between two other 10k events (North Shore Run Series)

More likely to get decent conditions; earlier start time

Possibility of national championship (real!) medals in teams and/or AG - probably the only one this year given National HM Champs looks increasingly unlikely

Only raced one road half this year

Wairarapa is also 7 November!  They were originally October, but when Wellington rescheduled from June to October, Wairarapa moved out a month.

Based on those lists, and the tone I think I'm detecting, it sounds like Nelson Half to me.

A PB race is a priority for me given what's happened this year.  But I don't know if any of the remaining options will give me the conditions I need.  November in Canterbury is likely to be hot, which rules out Selwyn.  It could be hot in Dunedin although more chance of good weather.

I definitely want to go to Queenstown and do that but 13 days after an all out race would mean I'd just have to go easy, and the coach probably wouldn't allow it.  Damn Wellington falls about the right time now but flights and accommodation are horrific that weekend (and no guarantee it will even happen now).

Sri Chinmoy is my only real option.  The course is not certified though, tiny race so almost the same as a TT, and lots of laps.  If I was on target for a PB, how will I feel if I get it but have to run an extra 100 metres past the finish line staring at my watch working out when to stop?  Yuck.

Steve - Surely you could cruise the Queenstown half?  It's not a PB course anyways right.

Watson - yeah I saw Wairarapa was also the same day!  Total logjam of races there now.

Corey - good luck with the mile race.  No expectations is good, you can just go out and have fun.

Anyways the way things are going I'm giving National HM Champs (Sept 19) less and less chance of happening.  Looking like the rest of NZ could be in the clear by then but Auckland is a different story.  Always seems to be churches that result in drawn-out (and race-impacting!) lockdowns, unfortunately.

True.  But Selwyn, my likely choice on November 7, has a high chance of being way too hot anyway.  For some reason it's a 9am start which is way too late in November (Dunedin is 9:30am).

Cromwell half on October 24 looks like the only possibility. Not great flights into Queenstown at the moment but that may change when levels drop. Maybe.

Darkwave - You may have seen on LetsRun that I asked for suggestions for a fall half in or near Georgia.  One suggestion that won’t work for me but might be of interest to you as a backup in case Indy is cancelled is the USATF national half championships December 5 in Hardeeville, SC, which is outside Savannah and so might be an easy flight for you.  There are sub-elite races at the same time as the championship races; I can’t meet the 1:25 sub-elite men’s cutoff, but the women’s sub-elite cutoff is 1:35.  (Women’s elite cutoff is 1:18.)  The course is a flat four-mile loop with one u-turn, and the weather might be pretty good in December.  mortgagenetworkroadraces.com is the website.
