UPDATE: Wahoo dongle for Garmin to Iphone to RA (Read 114 times)

    Hi Eric:

I'm thinking about purchasing a Wahoo dongle to connect my garmin to my Ipad then upload to RA.  I posted a question regarding the dongle on Gears and Wears, and another poster said:

I do the same thing as PP, but with my 610 and the Wahoo dongle. I can get my watch to upload to my iPad via the Wahoo App and then transfer to Garmin Connect but I can't get it then to go to RA. I gave up trying eventually. It says it is a .fit file but since it can't search my "computer/device" for the file, it won't transfer and I couldn't get it to go to GC and then transfer to RA.

I hope somebody smarter than I am can tell you how, because I can't figure it out myself.

So far, just having it on the Wahoo app's history, along with GC has been fine. I do have a third party app called "Garmin Stats" that does a super cool job of comparing activities better and give you graphs and charts, like a regular log on here has.

Do you know of a way to connect the Garmin Connect to RA?

    Thanks !

    eric :)

      sixelagogo,

RA has a Garmin Connect importer.  I haven't made it public because it was still under testing.  The catch is that it is intended for users that are migrating from GC, and is not for incremental import.  I can point you to the url if you're interested.

I wish I did, OP. Sounds like ericSmile might be able to help you(us....) with a bridge, so to speak. I have tried again and again to import using only my iPad and the dongle, and it just doesn't speak well to each other to get the info from one to another. My dislike of computers and windows has made me choose to just use GC since RA won't upload my stuff direct like GC does. If RA had an option on the Wahoo App to upload direct, I totally would. Or upload to both places. Or bridge upload transfer from one to another. Whatever. As it is though, I had to choose "PC frustration & slowness" vs "easy to transfer but no cool graphs/charts/features/logs".

As an iPad owner who likes to travel light, I would love to be able to upload directly to RA without bringing along a laptop.  Even better than the iPad would be if I could attach a dongle (don't own one yet) to my iPhone, or eventually use Bluetooth Smart (I think the Garmin fenix watch allows bluetooth uploads via a smartphone, so maybe it'll be incorporated into whatever replaces the 610).

oy-- only full migration...rats on that!

Next Question:  If I uploaded to Garmin Connect importer then export as a TCX or GPX file on the Ipad using the dongle, would that work?

            thanks eric!

            eric :)

One thing I can do is modify the GC importer to be incremental.  The only problem is I don't know how complicated that would be and so I won't know how much time it'll require.  I'll be busy with a project for the next couple of months so I don't know if I can get to it.

If there aren't too many entries, you can always export each workout from GC manually as TCX and then import it into RA.

I think this will be the way to go for me, though I wasn't sure if this could be done with the Ipad +Dongle+Garmin Connect.. Thanks so much for your help!

So I purchased the Wahoo dongle from Amazon for $50ish dollars and have been working to set it up this morning with my phone.  I have the Garmin 310 XT with the Ant stick, so I could pair (you can only do this with an ANT stick garmin).

The instructions were CRAP (as all instructions seem to be lately-WTF?), and I wasn't getting any kind of connection between my garmin and my phone.  Found the Wahoo blog http://www.wahoofitness.com/blogs.aspx which gave an explanation on how to download yer data from garmin to their fitness App.  I have an Iphone 4 (not 4S) which, according to the Utility App should not work due to some bluetooth issue- but it did.  Have not tried this on my Ipad yet.

After futzing around with it and getting it to recognize my Garmin Connect account, I got my watch to pair with my phone.  Checked Garmin Connect on my computer and there it was.  From the computer, I exported as a .TCX and then uploaded it to RA.  Can I do this all from my IPAD (particularily the exporting to .TCX?) Don't know, but I'll try it out again later today.

Even if I can't export to RA immediately, I'm glad that I'll be able to see what I've run/where after completing said run and NOT have to carry my heavy lap top with me.

I'm interested in learning if anyone else has experience with "the dongle"  (maybe an easier way???), but either way, so far, so good.

                      Update part 2:

Apparently there's no way to create a TCX file from the Ipad from Garmin Connect...it has to be done through a computer...This is ok, since the point of getting the whole dongle for me was for me to download my runs, look at the paths I took, and create new courses with the updated feature.  Uploading the RA can wait till I get to stateside.
