Is it safe to exercise if I have varicose or spider veins? (Read 107 times)

Can running be the cause of varicose veins? I have been suffering from varicose veins since I was 23. It hurts every time when I run. I don't know what to do. I have no family history of varicose veins anywhere. I saw some post by Vaughan vein where they say that Sclerotherapy is an effective and safe way to get rid of varicose veins( http://www.vaughanveinclinic.com/blog/general-category/is-sclerotherapy-safe/  Wink. Does anyone here have varicose veins? Have you had the varicose veins treated? Have varicose veins been exacerbated by the use of oral contraceptives? Is it safe to exercise if I have varicose or spider veins? If so what exercises are best? Please advice.

Denise524-  it is safe to exercise with varicose veins.  Walking, biking, running or swimming are all fine (swimming probably the best); when your leg muscles are working, as they would with any of those exercises, the blood is actively pumped back up the legs so the varicose veins have less problems with stagnant blood.  The worst thing for the veins is simply standing, or sitting with your legs & feet down.

Compression stockings of various types can help reduce the pain you feel at the end of the day.  Seeing your primary care provider for an initial evaluation would be a good starting place, and they could refer you to a vascular specialist to see if a procedure would be helpful.

      hope that helps.
