rune- good to know. My experience has really just been slight range-of-motion limitation and also my gait was weird right after i finished the race last monday, so i didn't cool down. No pain at all, or discomfort, or lumps. In subsequent days it felt like I had slightly less power from that side - so in going up a hill, feeling a little off balance. Not pain, just sensation while running. I did do some faster paces later in the week (got down to 6:40s) and that was fine though the faster I went I felt a very slight ROM limitation. My season is over I think at the end of the month, and it ends with a mile not a marathon, so hopefully I should be ok.

But always good to have a specialist in the back pocket -  who are you seeing?

rlk - Sorry if I was too harsh . It's just such an easy thing to ignore and write off because it's just annoying at first, and before you know it you are out for a long time. I think it first happened to me when I did an interval workout right before flying to Norway last fall. Didn't feel anything during or immediately after the workout but remember it feeling a bit uncomfortable to sit on the plane. Almost felt like a little lump right by the part of your hip bone you sit on.

Then I remember feeling some very mild discomfort when I ran an easy run a few days after arriving in Norway. Also felt it the day after during a long run. But I remember that it never really bothered me that much when I was running and I never felt like it was limiting me in any way (although it probably did), but I had some discomfort after my runs. And I definitely had the experience that it was triggered more with any sort of speed work, so I backed off that a couple of times.

So all in all I more or less ignored it for two and a half months, and then I ran a marathon on it (not very successfully either). And I would hate to see someone out for as long as I have been if I could do something to help out. And seeing a specialist can help pinpoint what you are dealing with and hopefully tell you it's something different. Let me know if you need a name for someone to see, I'm very happy with my specialist in SF.

I'm happy to hear this sounds a bit different than my symptoms. Somewhere mixed in with my problem (not sure if it is the chicken or the egg) it turns out I am a lot weaker on my left side.

I see Dr Bean at St Francis Center for Sports Medicine. Saw Dr Blake there a couple of years ago to take care of my heels, and since he basically fixed me in one visit I figured it was worth to give them a try for this injury as well.

Paging CK (and others).  Any suggestions for how to fix a corrupt Garmin .fit file?  More description of the issue here:

DWave - Beat me to it! Odd that the extra GPS location info would have been added during transport - I wonder how that happened.

It looks like your watch thought you ended that run in Cameroon! I trimmed that part of the file off and verified that I can upload it to RA. https://www.fitfiletools.com is what I used to do this.

Thanks!  Believe it or not, I reconnected my Garmin just now, and the file uploaded fine.

So...the Camerooning must have happened during the initial transfer off of the watch, but didn't happen when I connected the second time.  Just....very weird.

              Thanks, CK!

It's weird.  The error clearly wasn't on the device itself, since it later uploaded fine.  Wasn't in any of the cloud providers, since I got errors regardless of where I tried to upload it.

So has to have been a hardware issue, is my thinking.  My charging cable is a bit picky and has to be just right in order to connect the device, so I'm thinking the connection wasn't 100%, and something got screwed everytime I transferred.

Just...weird.  Time for a new cable, methinks.

If you wanted to get fancy you could get a watch with bluetooth. It's a feature I really like for uploading workouts from the 235. Not only do I no longer need a cable to upload/transfer activities I can add notes, gear, titles, etc. on my phone. While typing out lots of detail is a little bit of a pain (I don't even really like writing long text messages) it's just convenient.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

I use that tool once in a while.  Mostly when I forget to stop my GPS and then get in my car and drive home.  That tool makes it a simple procedure to snip the bogus part of the run.

My watch does have that (not sure if you're being sarcastic?).  I usually use the cable because that way I'm also charging the device.

I didn't try bluetooth this time because a) it didn't occur to me until later that the issue was in the transfer - I thought the file on the watch was corrupted; and b) since I don't normally use bluetooth to sync, it takes a very long time when I do, because it uploads all the files on the device since the last bluetooth sync, regardless of whether those files have been uploaded another way.

                        Speed Surplus

Hey all, sorry I've been MIA (had a lot going on), but I have put together a few decent weeks of running and so I registered for a 5k on the 4th of July. If I can keep up some decent volume and get a few workouts in, I'll target sub-19 again.

Also, my wife is running her first marathon this weekend! She has had a fairly good build up and has been a consistent runner for, like, the past 15 years, but she did have some IT band issues during her 20 miler the other week that were concerning.

I think she'll be in the 4:30-ish range if she doesn't have any IT problems during the race.

Not being sarcastic. I THOUGHT you had a newer (935?) Garmin however I didn't assume you were using it. As for doubling up charging/uploading that works. Bluetooth works for me probably because everything is synced so it's just one activity and my computer is about 11 years old so it's faster to bluetooth it. Plus I run at work so much it makes sense. Glad you got it figured out. Your workouts are still incredibly amazing.  oh, any reason you're tracking the weather? I did it in Garmin for a while to look back on so I wasn't sure if it was for the same reasons (planning race day/future training runs).

SC I noticed you were running more often. I was thinking about you when I saw those marathons in Snoqualime were looking for pacers. apparently they are having 4 marathons on that hill this year. Good luck this weekend. Remember....you never forget your first. This includes being the support for post-marathon recovery. I told my RB all you have to do is finish and you get the same medal. He saw people quitting and I think it kept him motivated to finish even though it was miserable.

On my Strava or on my RunningAhead log?  The Strava weather report is a plug-in bot that is often frustratingly wrong with the weather it reports.

I like to pull the weather for each run from Weather Underground, plus the wind and the pollen count, and note it in my log - it helps give context to the run.  It helps remind me to not get bent out of shape when my 800s in April are faster for the same effort than those in July or January.  I also like to note what I'm wearing - in the winter, it helps me remember exactly how to dress for a certain forecast/workout combination.

SC - are you pacing your wife?

DWave - I don't know if you've ordered spare Garmin cables before, but I'd recommend going with the (ridiculously expensive for what it is) Garmin OEM cable. I've experimented with 3rd party cables and at best they're really hit-and-miss regarding if they'll let you transfer data or not (no issues charging, though).

Anyone who knows - Are the Vaporfly 4%s really good enough to pick up 20% off for a guy who has never run in Nike's before?

I put this in sub-90, but thought I'd drop it here as well for some more input: For the last few weeks I've been experimenting with a higher-cushioned pair of shoes for easy and LRs (Altra Torin 3.5), and using my usual Altra Escalantes for speedy days. While I can certainly tell a difference between the cushion in the shoes, I'm not sure that it's really making much difference fore me - if that makes sense. Has anyone else noticed something like this? It really makes me want to just rotate a couple pairs of the Escalante for training days and call it good.
