give up, find something healthy that you enjoy doing and go do that. Seems silly to put so much effort into something that only brings you pain and frustration.

I would not recommend giving up - if it's something you enjoy, and you WANT to do. However, you have to listen to your body.
Go to a Sports Med Specialist (MD) and ask for follow-up with a Sports Med Physical Therapist... Often times there can be biomechanical issues related to tightness and/or weakness that are in joints (e.g.: hips or core) that are not on your 'radar' but can have a very profound effect on how your body can take the pounding stress of running.
