I'm wearing the shirt. (Read 408 times)

Don't run the race, don't wear the shirt, right?    I trained for the St. Paddy's day 10k a couple of towns over, signed up early and was looking foreward to my 1st organized 10k in many moons.   The night before the race I found out that I had to work the next morning.   Not long, but I'd miss the race.   So I had my post-race beers that night, and worked the next morning, finishing oddly enough about race start time.

Screw it, I'm doin it!   I laced up my running shoes, warmed up, even stood on the starting line by my house for a minute, same as a race, and off I went!

Got a PR and I'm wearing the shirt!

I'd wear the shirt even if I didn't do the event.  Meh, I paid for it, and I'm bad at following 'rules'. lol

      Nice PR!  Smile

I broke my ankle two weeks before my goal marathon at the end of February (New Orleans).  We went to the expo anyway since my husband was running it, and I sure as heck picked up my packet and my shirt that I'd paid for.

I'm totally going to wear that darn shirt.  I trained through January in Minnesota, ran in the dark and the snow and single digit temperatures, and did 18, 17, and 20 mile runs on the treadmill because it was too icy to run outside; I worked my ass off through 16 weeks of a training program and had done everything other than taper.  Barring some freak injury during the race, I'd have finished that marathon.  So I like to think I earned my shirt, even if I didn't run in the actual race.

I would also like to think that since I already broke my ankle, that I have done my penance and it will cancel out any potential bad mojo from wearing the shirt Joking

        My wildly inconsistent PRs:

        5k: 24:36 (10/20/12)

        10k: 52:01 (4/28/12)

        HM: 1:50:09 (10/27/12)

        Marathon: 4:19:11 (10/2/2011)

If anybody asks, just say you couldn't run the race because of work, but you like the shirt.

Why would we have to throw away a nice shirt just because of what "they" say?

I wear a couple shirts from races I missed because  of the flu.

I signed up for a 50K in February. Then I found out I had to be in Arizona for a meeting the Friday before and the Monday after, so I would have to stay over the weekend. I found a 50K in AZ the same day and ran that. But the race here had a better premium (a Brooks running vest versus a non-gender specific t-shirt, which looks like a dress on me). I went to packet pickup the night before I flew out and I wear the vest all the time. Why not?

Doesn't bother me at all.  If you missed the race because you couldn't physically do the race, that'd be different, but it's not like work is a controllable thing.

To each his own, but I don't know why anyone would want to wear a shirt from a race they didn't run.  I already have too many shirts from races that I did run.

I'm kind of on the fence on this one.  My general attitude would be, it's just a shirt, why not.  Why let it go to waste.  The only exception would be if it's a shirt for a race of marathon length or longer.  I don't know why that would make a difference, but I'd feel uncomfortable wearing the shirt in those circumstances.  Even more so if it was going to be my first marathon.

I wasn't able to run a half(would have been my first) 2 weeks ago because of a calf injury. I could have walked it, but it was rainy and windy and cold and walking 13.1 miles seemed like it would make my calf worse anyways, and I just want the damn thing healed already. So I picked up my shirt with no intention of running the race. All it is is an extra shirt for them that they purchased and printed, what would they use it for that I can't? I haven't worn it yet(weather isn't "short sleeve" type weather yet) but I will. Maybe I'll think of the smart choice that I made for my health on that race by not running it injured? Maybe it'll shame me into not ever DNS again? I dunno, sometimes failure can motivate better than success. I have lots of success shirts from races I completed. This mint green tech shirt is the only one I have that reminds me that I made mistakes in training that shouldn't have been made and it cost me.

                            Is what it is.

Good on you, still racing the race on your own. Wear the damn shirt.

I ran the Hogeye Marathon Relay last year, and it started raining during my leg.  At one point on the route, Fleet Feet Sports had a tent up, and as I passed, a guy yelled, "Hey!  Need a jacket?"

I said, "Sure, thanks!"  And he tossed it to me.  Instead of a throwaway-type jacket like I expected, I immediately could tell it was more substantial, and I saw a Brooks logo on it.  Just to confirm, I shouted "You need this back?" and he said "Nope!"

After I finished, I got to look at it more closely, and as far as I can tell, it's a Brooks "Essential Run" jacket, which cost around $60 at the time.  Pretty sweet!  Only problem is, it has "Rock and Roll Marathon Series - Nashville" embroidered across the back, with the same logo and "2011" on the front.

...but even though I didn't run or even train for that race, it's still one of my favorite pieces of apparel.  Do I feel a little self-conscious about wearing it, giving the impression I ran that event?  A little, especially if I'm around other runners.  But it doesn't really matter.  If anyone does ask about that race, I at least have a cool story to tell.

And as far as the OP...it's my feeling that the biggest part of running a goal race is the preparation for it, so I wouldn't have a problem wearing that shirt, either.

The real reason for the shirts is PR for the event.  You're just a vehicle for their advertising, just like a race car driver.  So, wear the shirt, and send them a bill.
