Menace to Sobriety

Meanwhile it is time for me to start screening my caller ID again because the damn political calls have started and soon will reach critical mass.

And I have found it isnt as much fun telling political callers that i am <insert whatever persona would be the polar opposite of their target> as it is telling the door to door church proselytizers that I am wiccan and/or a satanist etc.  and would love to see them at my next ritual.

Janie, today I quit my job. And then I told my boss to go f*** himself, and then I blackmailed him for almost sixty thousand dollars. Pass the asparagus.

I'm not one to quit when I'm ahead, but you guys are right.

Primaries, and for that matter the presidential election, are over long before they get to me.

BUT hey...there's still congress. And state legislature.  And the sherrif.  And the judges.

and the fact that in this state, everything is a voter referendum.  We vote on every piss-ante law that comes along.   I'm not sure why we even have state legislature here except to fight over what is left of the budget after all the designated by law budgetary constraints are addressed.  Pretty much we'd be better off just hiring a few accountants to work it all out.

We're headed that way here.  Apparently one party does not understand the role of representative government.

That's what happens when the elected representatives really don't represent.

I see.  So whenever your party is in the minority, you just walk out and claim that the party in the majority...put there by voters...is not representing.

Or, perhaps, you could leave it up to the voters to decide whether their representatives are representing them, by either keeping them in place or replacing them?  Otherwise, why don't we just have a referendum on everything?

BTW, the only independent survey of the public found that <25% of the public opposes the bill in question.  Seems the public is being represented rather well.

If the latter, your comment makes a lot more sense.  I was purposefully lax on details as we have enough tangents in the thread and I didn't want to go there as we hear enough of it here.  I've been hanging up on the AFL-CIO almost nightly.

I have not, nor will read this thread.  However, I clicked on it because I saw my friend Jeff's name as the last poster.  Jeff...as a friend, I must tell you NOT to post on threads about politics.  Just. Stop. Doing. It.

For the record, I've been enjoying Jeff's posts, and, yeah, the thread has stayed remarkably civil.  So far.

You'll never get me to buy into the fact that partisanship is the fault of one party.  You can argue "well they did it first", but that won't get us anywhere.  When my kids would get into an argument one would say "he or she started it.".  My response was "I don't care, you're both doing it now.".  I blame both parties equally.

It's not easy, moving to bipartisanship.  I think that the thing that makes it toughest on both sides is the grief that you get from your own party when you try moving toward the middle.

So no matter what either side does, the other side is also to blame? That seems surprisingly ethically dubious..

If one kid beats the other, and the victim complains, and the aggressor says that the victim started it, then you hold both to blame?

At least at first blush, that seems as ethically questionable as blaming rape victims for inviting it by their choice of clothing or choosing to walk outside at night?

(I'm surprised, because I've seen you post on politics and ethics, and usually you make sense to me. I think I must be misunderstanding this, or missing some important caveats here -- maybe you mean this only applies to non-physical actions or something.)

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

I think there was an underlying implication in his case:

I'm doing this because you started it, but regardless of who started it both parties eventually became active participants.

In the bullying and rape scenario, the victim is not actively enjoining the battle with an offensive (not offend, but offence) stance.

I liken it more to "holding" in football.  One side may get called for it first but everyone knows there is holding on every play on both sides of the ball.  It would be silly for one team to compalin about being held.
