Mick - nice week.  Only needing to shuffle two weeks for the marathon is great.

Mark - nice week.  When I feel sick, I don't get better on the run.

    James - nice weeks.

Darkwave - nice week.  I saw your 5km on Strava and worried that your neuro issues effected you, nice to see it's just MP work.

Third small week in a row, life got in the way, especially having a 7 day work week.  Two gym sessions, a short tempo (which I struggled), a hill session (which went much better than I expected) and one bike.

On the State of Running - I've been following the comments on doping and testing, but really don't know enough about it to add anything.  I read this morning that Kara Goucher, who helped reveal Alberto Salazar's behavior, has a book coming out, reminding us that drugs aren't the only thing plaguing sport.

Watson - That's a pretty good week for having to work 7 days.

Darkwave - I'm glad you were able to handle crowded race conditions well and are optimistic about the latest meds.

James - Good to hear you're making progress, though sorry you felt the prior week was boring.

Mark - It's great when getting into a run can dispel feelings of malaise.  Good luck with the race (and getting set for it).

Mick - Good week of running.  I hope the reason for your postponement isn't too serious - good thing there's an alternative ready at hand.

Weather Whining - The forecast for my race on Sunday is too warm, too wet, and too windy.  58º(14C), 75% chance of rain, and winds of 20mph (32kph).

I had a mixed week.  On Tuesday I found my body wasn't ready for a track workout and Thursday's HM pace run was more easy miles than HM miles.  With a race coming up this Saturday, I'm in easy/taper mode now.  I learned a medication I'm taking hampers high intensity efforts, which could be one of the reasons I struggled in the 5k 8 days ago.  If the weather forecast for Saturday holds up, I'll have one of those races remembered for the conditions and not the times (though given the race has been designated an RRCA Eastern Region Championship Race, I won't even be sniffing any AG placements as the field will have some fast people in it).  40.5 miles / 65.1km / 7:04:23 made it my highest volume week of the month.

Re weather whining: last night the temperature just dropped by another 12° Celsius. I slept really well, finished my JD workout today and then caught myself complaining about how cold it was Smile

Mark: hope this isn't really serious. Don't listen to Steve, it usually doesn't take that long. You will be fine for your race Smile

Fred: Nice week, despite holding a bit back. Impressed by all the racing you do. You must be really into the swag that they give out like t-shirts, the medals etc Smile My reason for pushing back the marathon is not serious at all. The family committee decided we are going away on a short holiday that weekend of April 23rd. Nothing is booked yet, but I am a good soldier and follow the family Marshall Smile I think I will live longer that way; why put up a fight that I can't win in the first place!

          DW & James: nice work!

Watson: what do you work that you have to buckle 7 days in a row?  And when you go out for a quick mile, do you take the family dog or why only 14minutes?

Re shoes - I have ordered a pair of Saucony Endorphin Pro 3's. Totally unnecessary at my pace, but I felt like I should do something completely stupid and splurge, although they were 20% discounted, but the 80% is still an unreasonably high price. Stev-O also runs in them and that was my ultimate seal of approval - it's like when you are looking for a new car and then you start seeing the model you like everywhere - I assume my Iphone now reads my mind AND listens to my private conversations. I hope I got the size right - never have owned any Saucony's but went with my standard size. Just read one review that they rub on the heal, I hope this is not the case as I already have one pair of shoes that does this, and it is killing me (Asics Magic Speed). Wish me luck everyone!

Mick - Glad to hear the happy reason for the delay in your marathon.  As to racing - I just enjoy it.  I like the atmosphere; hanging out with other runners before the race; chatting with people I recognize from other races; meeting new people; and then running in a group of people striving for similar goals.  It's just fun.  Am I able to put 100% effort into every race?  Probably not, but for me racing is as much about the experience as it is about running my fastest.

Update on my forecast:  there's now a chance of thunderstorms and the wind could be 25mph gusting to 40 mph (40/64kh).  Oh, what fun that will be.

Fred, I feel your pain. My forecast for Saturday is equally lousy. Low 58, high 73, showers in the morning, winds 20-30 mph with gusts to 40. At least the thunderstorms are holding off until afternoon which should make for a really fun ride home.

The irony to the warm forecast is that I ran Salisbury their first year. Then it was an 8am start the last weekend in April. It wass 75 and sunny when I finished. They changed to a 7am start and  first weekend in April afterr that due to the chancec for cooler temps.

Yeah, and Sunday morning is going to be so nice for racing.  Sunny & cool, though still a bit windy.

I pulled up my map from last year.  Miles 6 - 11 are a straight run SSW, meaning a five mile stretch almost straight into the wind.  I guess the bright side is for the last two miles we'll have the wind at our backs, but that 5 miles with no respite has the potential to be brutal.  Kinda wished my RP and I had practiced running single file so we could take turns drafting off each other.

                  Wednesday 3.7 miles treadmill

Thursday 6.25 treadmill & strength training

                  Friday rest day

                  Saturday 3.5 treadamill

                  Sunday 8 with 6 x 5 min HM effort

James / Darkwave - that's SOME variation.  I was noticing it / enjoying it big time last week when it got like 3C colder (I think around 6-7F).  As much as I weather complain, truth is we get much smaller variations here... I guess we are just more precious about them.

Watson - did you decide on a marathon?

Fred - if it's any consolation, looking at this stage like Sunday morning when I'm racing is likely to have the worst conditions we've seen in at least a month... warm and humid.  Ick.

MJ - good luck with the shoes!

Thanks, though I still think I'll have some fun.  As per my reply to Mick, part of why I go to races is the experience, the crowd, being around other runners.  There will be some camaraderie in the joint suffering, some bonding in the joint fight against the weather, something to reminisce about with people who were there.

So remember running a HM in Atlantic City into a 35 mph wind? Yea, that was a great time There is a random Starbucks on the boardwalk in one of the closed hotels, I have been VERY tempted in 3 of the races to stop in there for a warm drink. Main reason I don't is that I tend to spill them just walking, so trying to jog to the finish holding a hot drink seems like a waste of money.

Yes, I do remember that.  Better than I remember many of my other halves.  I survived and I can look back on it with satisfaction.  And it makes for good story material.

Fred - I known nothing of your medication, is it possible to time your med to minimize how it effects high intensity efforts? Or vice versa? Nice week and good luck on the weather for racing. Five miles straight into the wind is really tough in a race, the second biggest running event locally has the last 5 miles of the half and full normally into the wind (and sometimes a very strong wind) and it's tough.

Mick - my short runs were to/from the gym. I normally work weekday day, but am involved in a fairly large IT project where we had Dress Rehearsal 1 over the weekend. Good luck with Endorphin Pro 3's, they have had really good reviews.

                            Half - nice week.

They arrived yesterday, but the weather forecast is not looking ideal for Sunday (16-17C and 100% humidity)... so I may just stick with my Next% 2's for that.  Bit of a shame as the weather over the next 3 days would've been perfect for racing.  That's the risk in early autumn though I guess.

How many km do you get out of those plated shoes before you start using them for workouts etc?

HK: I finally understood your JD scaling question, I believe. When he has like 150 minutes = 17 miles. I run the 17 miles, however long it takes. Not sure this is the way its intended. But the 2Q has 17 miles as max long run (and I have gone beyond that already, because I want to get to 19-20 miles in my training within 3 hours max). If I was to scale the length down, my long runs would be too short I think. Anyways so far I have avoided major injury - no signs of runners knee, shin splints etc. So will just keep doing what I am doing I guess?

Watson: understand now, you live 1.6 miles from your gym, that makes sense as you get there already at the right temperature. And good extra workout to run to and from. Fingers crossed for the going live of your IT project; hope it goes ok so you don't have to put in a lot of hours afterwards!!!
