Superhuman or just a good Endurance Runner? (Read 459 times)

But... my friend also points out that though Dean also won his AG at last year's Kauai Marathon, none of his splits are available, though they are for other runners. To my friend (beaten in the AG by Dean last year as well) this is more evidence that Dean is a cheater.

Personally I'm ready to call this done, and I wish I'd never posted about it.

The explanation seems plausible enough.  The guy is a 3:00:XX marathoner, so making up 6 or 7 minutes to finish at 3:30:XX seems well within his capabilities.

He admitted what happened, took responsibility, got DQ'ed, didn't complain about it, and everyone got their prize.  (except for maybe the glory at the finish line/ceremonies).

Unless pictures/video/other witnesses surface that prove that DK jumped in, for me, the case is closed.

That's about what I expected. I'd contacted Bill Buley, the author of that article -- he hadn't known Dean had been DQed, and promised to get the scoop and do another story. Personally I buy Dean's explanation.

Well, there is still my friend (2AG, now 1AG), who says "Bob he honestly jumped into the race from his condo and honestly did not run the Marathon and honestly thought he should get an award ahead of someone that ran the distance honestly."

But I have not heard details of how he knows this. Sounds to me like Dean actually ran 6-7 minutes faster than his recorded gun time (not to mention the few miles he ran to the start). In his situation, I don't think I would feel too guilty about accepting gun time as my start time, with the mat gone, and still accepting my AG award.

The question, now, is whether you friend actually gets the big plate instead of the medium sized plate....

My running friend got bumped up to 3rd in his AG for the half because one of the guys who received an award in his AG (45-49) was listed in the wrong AG on the preliminary results.  He hasn't yet received his small plate from the other guy. Smile

I actually buy into the logic and his story that John M provided.

But, I do not recall him passing me before I passed him.  The race was small enough to notice change.  From mile 4 - mile 10 (after the start of the hill, and before the split at mile 10.8), there were very few changes... I do remember one fast girl passing me around mile 7 and saying "wow, where did she come".  Soon after, I said "wow, where did she go" as she disappeared in the distance and became super small.  Her speed was unusual for that portion of the race relative to the time it took her to get to that portion of the race.

But, I do not remember that bright yellow singlet guy (Dean) passing me with abnormal pace.
But, I'm also sure that he did.

What kind of race ambassador makes plans to just show up at the starting area in the nick of time? Hell, if he cared to be there 30 minutes before the gun he would have been able to knock out "a few miles" and still made the start.

Over at RWOL, there is a relevant question from Dean...er..."Joe" to Dave McGillivray

Heh. Interesting. But, Dean did have a bib.

MTA he's also still listed in the marathonguide results.

Probably the officials were fine with it until my friend complained.

I'd be real interested in how your friend got his information regarding DeanK jumping into the race from his condo (did anybody see him jump in and not start).  How does he know it to be true if he was a mile or 2 up the road?  Did he see him drinking coffee at the doorstep as he was running by?

I'd be real interested in how he feels about truly finishing the race 9 minutes behind DeanK and thinking he deserved the 1st place plate if DeanK ran the entire 26.2 see comments * & ** below.

To me, it seems like the new winner wanted a larger plate and bragging rights against somebody he doesn't like.

Basically, I didn't realize that he was the one that complained to the RD  Undecided.

*I understand that a race director may take it away from him since there was no timing mat.

**I understand that DeanK may not have truly run the 26.2

It's looking more and more to me like this was just a guess on his part. I've tried to press him for details but haven't gotten them. He's somebody I trusted not to make such assertions without evidence; my bad. I asked him after the latest new article if he had any reason to doubt Dean's explanation:

I do. I walked down the same road, of course the road is closed. There is nothing unexpected when your condo is on the course.

That's not at all the same as saying someone saw him. Then later when someone asked him "So, he did not jump off his condo along the line? I am confused." he answered

I guess he didn't according to the article

He says they offered him a replacement 1AG award, but he told them not to bother; it was the principle that mattered. But yes, seems like there is definitely some animosity there.

Uh... oops. I thought I had posted this quote earlier, but now I don't see it:

He was caught ..., I heard about it the next day and approached the RD, after investigating it they took him out of the results.

Not lately according to athlinks.  He is mostly a 3:30 to 3:44 marathoner.  He did very well for him with a 6 minute deficit in that heat and on a hilly course!

I stand corrected-- that 3:09 in NYC was longer ago than I thought.

                      Uh oh... now what?

History sort of goes away at times or something fails in the extrapolations,

                        transmogrifications, and gets misapplied...

In my declining years (1999) with no road marathons in the previous

two years, one road 34.5 miler (3,000+ feet of climb) in 5:05:56 in

July of 1997, I "ran" a road marathon in 3:15:52 at age 57.  I am not

even close to a high-level runner, just had a pleasant day.

With the base Karnazes has, he could skip the racing part and probably

still be able to run in the 3:15 - 3:30 range.

                        --

The timing assumes those were raced. When he did the 50 in 50 in 50, he jogged the courses in about 4hrs while chatting with all the people accompanying him. Then spent a long time answering questions, signing books, etc. and then was flying from Anchorage to somewhere else to do it all over again.  I don't know how complete Athlinks is, but it only has a small fraction of my races - maybe 10%.

"So many people get stuck in the routine of life that their dreams waste away. This is about living the dream." - Cave Dog

I see a 2:55 at the 2007 NYC Marathon.  I have a PR just under 2:55 and if I am in shape it would be easy to make up 6 minutes to get to a 8:00 pace in the first 10 miles.   Either way, I can't see how a guy who used to win the occasional ultra and in the top 5 of quite a few would be willing to stake his reputation to win an age group award especially when his reputation is his livelihood.

I'm not a fan of DK, but the complete lack of evidence doesn't really compel me to think he cheated.

Farah is a poor example to show in there.  10K specialists turn into exceptional marathon runners quite frequently...former WR holders Geb and Tergat and many others.  The 10K and marathon are a heck of a lot more related than the marathon and trail ultras.

The most superhuman thing about DK is his self-promotion ability.  Smile

I'd say this is spot on. I chuckled at the last sentence pretty good.

They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that. "If I am still standing at the end of the race, hit me with a Board and knock me down, because that means I didn't run hard enough" If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they'd starve to death. "Don't fear moving slowly forward...fear standing still."
