Serious Foot and Leg Cramping. Suggestions? (Read 550 times)

Anyone have pizza?

It happens to me when I'm deep into a long run (between 13 and 26 miles). My foot goes slightly numb and then wow! toes lock up foot locks up, sometimes even the calf muscle of that leg. It gets to be such, that I actually have to slow to a walk or stop completely and try to relax myself, just for it to unlock. Angry I've tried everything, extra potassium, drinking more water a/o gatorade. It seems like nothing I do helps. Is there something medically wrong with me? Dead The worst part of it all is that I am feeling fine up to this point, and have plenty of energy left. Having to stop totally ruins my time. And it's been a contributing factor to my less than desirable marathon finishes in the past. Is There A Doctor In The house???? Black eye Thanks!

    Barefoot and happy

I don't know if this relates directly to your cramping, but let me spout off one idea: When I started incorporating some barefoot running into my training I was shocked to discover how much stronger and more flexible your feet get if you actually exercise them. I was using muscles I never knew I had. Typical shoes leaves your feet stiff and weak. Maybe this contributes to your trouble. If you're intimidated by the thought of going barefoot, you could check out minimal shoes like Nike Free or Vibram FiveFingers. http://tinyurl.com/3cxw4l http://runningbarefoot.org

      Anyone have pizza?

Sorry for getting back late to you but thanks for the advice. Between doing foot exercises (opening and closing toes) and having a couple of salt packets during the marathon last Sunday, I was able to at least stave off foot cramps!
One experienced runner I was talking to mentioned yellow mustard packets for cramping... Confused
