PR's - rules for claiming or stating a PR? (Read 1382 times)

I've run 27 minutes on a downhill (down a mountain) 4 miler, no way will I ever claim it as a PR, just a course record for me

      1. the "5k" while on vacation was 3.59 miles.

      2. the course was hilly and I run on flat terrain.

      3. I was planning on an all out effort for 22 minutes tops... but at the 22 minute mark, I was still a road away from the finish line....

      4. It was a small race (40 - 50 entrants), and the police car that was leading me was driving too slow Smile

The P stands for personal, so you can call it however you want it.

On your deathbed, you won't wish that you'd spent more time at the office.  But you will wish that you'd spent more time running.  Because if you had, you wouldn't be on your deathbed.

          Hey Globbie!!

They are called PERSONAL Records.  Whatever you decide is OK by you.

Repetition is a sure path to reinforcing a point.  You know, kind of like how you've been copy-paste-posting the same shit for years.Wink

              5. MTA: the 20:00 time was 3 miles... it's the extra 1/10th that eats a good 45 seconds or whatever...

OK, we're really not getting anywhere.  So let me ask you, what do you that you should do?  Do you think that it is OK to take a 5K split from some training run or a longer race?  If the answer is yes then go ahead and do it.  You're going to get a lot of different opinions here and in the end I don't think it matters what other people think.

I was mostly just messing with you other than the part about going out and racing a few 5Ks.  That would give you the best idea of what your PR is, and would eliminate any gray area.  Plus racing is fun.

              Not at it at all.

... because I might finish the race slower than what I want to claim I could finish it in based on a training runs I've done.  I don't want an official time that's too slow Smile

Damn...If I thought like that I'd never race.

Having a soft PR is only motivation to go erase it. Having a strong PR only serves as more motivation to go break it.

As you say, it doesn't really matter since nobody really cares about our PRs other than ourselves.

For myself, I'm happy to count something as a PR when I know I've run a given distance in a given time. The main thing is to have confidence that both have been measured pretty accurately.

Don't have pacers. Don't wear a watch. The race must be certified. There must be a photo of the finish, showing the clock. There must be a manual backup timing system. There must be a backup video recording system.

If you run 12:30 at your next 5K, you'll be glad you trusted me on this.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

I understand that you were messing with me.... not a problem... but I felt I had a couple reasons why I didn't finish faster Smile... BTW, I happened to finish in 2nd place overall in the race.. cheers for me!!!

Regarding my PR's.  I don't state them.  In fact, I don't know them.

I train more than I race because I like to train, and shorter distance races eat up some other longer distance training that I typically like to do on the weekends.

To me, PR is Personal Record, and is a measurement based on previous "logging of events" or "records of events".

Some have stated what I think to be true (Globbie, rlemert, kencamet, pr100, and others).

I don't log PR's on RA, and I don't know what my PR's are (except for my bigger races - 1/2 marathon, marathon, 1/2 ironman).  But, I measure stuff, and I'm more curious on what I'm reading when others are writing about their PR's.

                      Cheers,

I'm running the 12;30 at Market Rasen this Sunday. It's my first race on the track. A horse track that is.

Which by a very circuitous route brings me to a point. I may do some track 5k races next year which i would consider different beasts to road races. I don't see any way of putting 2 PRs up on RA of the same distance - or am I missing something?

Usually there's a story behind a PR, so maybe don't count something as a PR if it's not memorable...

800m: leadoff leg of the 4x8 against Flushing. Passed their guy with 300 to go, thought I was gonna die with 100 to go. Ran even splits, a rarity for me in the 800.  As was often the case with high school, impressing a girl was part of it.

1600m: personal time trial back on the old high school track when I had just finished my frosh year of college. Ran it  because I knew I was in good mile shape (but there really aren't any mile races once you leave school). Jim ran laps 2 and 3 with me as a rabbit. Ran the last lap in 66.

3200m: Central Michigan Chip relays. First time I ever ran sub-5 split in the 2-mile. Passed Robert Gray of Flint Central with 200m to go. I also passed him on the same spot of the track later that day during the distance medley, so I consider him my bitch to this day, even though he doesn't know who I am.

5k: Todd Houser robo-paced me for 3 miles, then I kicked past him in the stretch.  I've never run more even splits in a race in my life.  This was in 1989, long before the era of GPS and Garmin, and Todd was just a machine when it came to pacing. Smart guy -- reined me in when I wanted to go out too fast, then dragged me along kicking and screaming when I wanted to slow down in the 2nd mile.

10k: Dave Farlow Sr., father of a local track legend, dusted my ass in the middle of this one.  I don't know how old the guy was -- he seemed ancient, but he was probably in his fifties, and 35-something for a guy in his fifties is pretty solid.

15k: best negative split race of my life. I ran strong for 9.2 miles, staggered in the last 0.1, and hurled. The hurl was yellow from the truckstop burger the night before, which had too much mustard.

25k: At the 10k mark, I was blessed with the appearance of porta-john, which saved me the indignity of shitting myself mid-race.

I haven't tried this, but I wonder if you can put the distance as 5000m on the track race and 5km on the road race and have it treat them differently?

Most of us don't log PRs on RA, they just magically appear based on our fastest recorded time for each race distance.  The only road race PR of mine that I know off the top of my head that's different from what RA says is my 10 mile PR, which was a split during my half marathon PR...

The ones that are memorable or important to me, I know off the top of my head.

But, the crappy side of that is that my PR for a 1/2 marathon is much faster than what shows.  What shows is leg 3 of a 1/2 Ironman.

As many have stated, I guess I need to race more to motivate me to update my slow PR's....
