Route Editor Slow / Buggy (Read 569 times)

    Hi,

Great site, but I have problems using the Route Editor to create routes.

    I am running XP SP3.

The main problems are that it is really slow to update or plot between points, and when toggling "follow road" on or off e.g running a footpath or off road section, it will not reenable the function once the tick box is checked.

The features like "out and back" and "return to start from this point" also do not work.

Are there any updates or plug-ins I need for thie app?

    thankyou!

    best regards

      Lee,

Without knowing details about your computer, I cannot provide you with the proper response.  At a minimum, I need to know your browser and its version.  Since it's maps related, the speed of your computer and the amount of memory are also relevant.

Short of that, my guess is you're using IE.  IE is notorious in leaking javascript memory.  If you visited other sites before coming to RA, these other sites will affect the performance of RA because IE did not free all the memory the sites have consumed.  Try closing down the browser.  If you're using IE 8, you need to close down *all* of the windows and try again.  You'll notice that the mapping tool will be more responsive.

The responsiveness of the tool also depends on the length of your route.  If you are mapping a route, say, from Los Angeles to Boston, it will take a long time to render the route.  During this time, the tool may appear to be unresponsive to you.  Additionally, the follow road feature depends a lot on your bandwidth.  If you have a slow connection, then it will take longer to calculate the route.

As for "out and back" and "return to start from this point" not working, perhaps you're not using it correctly.

        Hi Eric,

Thankyou very much for the reply.

        I was using IE8, version 8.0.6001.18702

My PC is nothing special, but it seems to cope Ok with general day to day browsing.

        It is a AMD Semperon 3400+ , 2.00Ghz with 2GB of RAM.

Taking your points on board, I downlaoded Fireforx 3.5, and the difference is astounding.

Route planning is incredibly quick, the route updating almost instantly.

I guess I am not using the tools correctly as in Firefox I get an error window telling me the point must be on the route

        but in IE8 nothing happened.

Is there a user guide kicking about anywhere?

Anyway, thankyou for your help, I really enjoy using the site and tools to log my training

        : )

        cheers

          Lee,

IE8 is new enough that you should not have any performance issues.  If you're inclined, you can try closing *all* the browser windows, then reopen IE and try to use the mapping tool again.  I developed the site with IE8 and FF3 so I know they do not have any major performance problems, unless the map contains many points.

I do not have any documentation, and I probably should.  Here's a description about the "return to start from this point" feature.

You can generalize any route into "out and back", "loop", and (what I call) "lollipop".  The first two should be obvious.  A lollipop is a route where the first and last part of the route are the same (the stem of the lollipop), with the middle part being different.  An example would be a route that leads to a pond, and then you run run around it and take the same route back to where you started.

Since the first and last part of the route are the same, you do not have to map the return leg.  By using the "return to start from this point", you can save some work.  To make it work, you would create the route as usual.  When you're ready to map out the part that returns you to the starting point, make sure the last point marker is on the route, then click the "return to start" button.  It should then follow the route back to the start, thus saving you some work.
