Is the battery in the unit replaceable? Battery icon on. When the unit is plugged in it reads charged in :05.

    Menace to Sobriety

Try scraping the contacts on the unit and the charging base to make sure they're clean.

MTA: I have an older 201 thats about 5 years old. When it had about 2 years on it, it started acting weird, wouldn't charge right, wouldn't hold my setting, etc. I think the memory was full. It stuck in the "on" and I couldn't turn it off. I just let it run completely down. It worked, the memory was clear, but it charged up and has worked fine since then.

Janie, today I quit my job. And then I told my boss to go f*** himself, and then I blackmailed him for almost sixty thousand dollars. Pass the asparagus.

        Crash

Other than scraping the leads, try a small (small) amount of non-gel toothpaste. The abrasives in the paste will help clean the leads better than simply wiping it can. I've used this many times and it works. I've had several people tell me about it working for them also.

Try rebooting it by pressing the mode lab/reset and simultaneously for a few seconds.

My 305 sometimes acts like it won't charge and rebooting takes care of it.  There's supposed to be a fix for this you can download but I've been too lazy to look for it.

            Chris

I have the same problem with mine.  If you find a solution please let me know.  I tried most of the solutions suggested and even tried charging it on another charging base with no luck.  When the unit is plugged into the chargin base i can power it on and it appears to work ok, but as soon as i take it off the base it shuts off even though it says charge complete...

                Instructions From Garmin support

I am happy to help you with this. From what you describe your unit is
not functioning correctly. To correct this issue I would suggest that
you master reset your unit to clear out any corrupt data. This will
clear out all data in the unit and reset it to factory defaults and
settings. Following are instructions on how to perform a Master Reset on
                your unit:

-- With the unit powered off, Press and hold the Mode and Power button
at the same time.  You will then see a screen that says, "Do you really
want to erase all user data Yes/NO" Select Yes and the unit will be
                reset.

After the master reset please place your unit outside so that it has a
clear view of the sky for 25 to 30 minutes so that the unit can acquire
new almanac data. I would also suggest going to our website at the
following link and updating your units operating system.
