Seems to me that maintenance by definition means to maintain without degradation. Degradation due to age/illness/injury, though, might mean that true maintenance is impossible in the long run. And this is pretty much me:

Gosh, this struck a chord with me. Reminds me of a conversation years ago I had with a guy who was quite a few years older than me during a track workout. His asked me "what are your goals?" My answer: "To get faster!" His response. "Hell, I'd be glad to just not get any slower." Now I am starting to feel like that guy.

I consider basic fitness and racing peak fitness to be different. Maintaining basic fitness would allow one to reach racing fitness in a relatively short period of time without a big build up of mileage, focusing primarily on race specific workouts.
