I'm gonna self-promote here, but I took the winning times of every single distance race at the North Dakota State Track Meet since it started, and made charts to see how they changed over time. I've noticed that in the past 20-30 years the best of the best haven't changed all that much overall. Obviously this is a small cross-section of runners, but its' data nonetheless.

      Prairie running is peace.

What we have notices in WI - The best has not changed that much, but the depth has increased.  So the winning times are pretty close but the average of the top 5 or top 10 in Cross Country or Track is better.

We have noticed the same in D3 college results.
