Because this place needs another goal thread...
Sub 18 has been on my mind for a while. I got there once in 2011 and thought I had it figured out. Alas, it's been a while. I ran 18:10 at the beginning of the year and thought I'd be there soon but never bettered that time.
As it often is with running, big goals aren't necessarily met in the short term, thus the 2014 thread. Who's in?
People who should run some track workouts until they can string three 5:48 miles together.
bhearn - Ran longer stuff instead
jpdeaux - Audited the class then asked for a refund

I'll be 41 on May 1st. I have not been sub 18 since high school. My best this year was 18:53 at the Viking's Back to Football 5k on 9-21.
Haven't run sub 18 yet. Closest was summer of 2011 with an 18:10 and a handful of mid 18's. Nothing close since then, and nowhere close to there at the moment. Count me in and working on it. Oh yeah, 45 yrs.
Current Goals: Run and stuff
Thought you had it figured out, huh? Me, too but it ain't quite that easy is it?! 52, ran 17:54 August, 2012 when I was 51 but have come no closer than 18:23 since then. I'm hoping that things come together for a shot at a 17:XX this coming year. Maybe in the spring, though Summer is my real 5K season.

Awesome. Thank you. This will definitely be a focus next season... I made it under (17:54) recently in what *may* be my final 5k effort this season (Sept 2013) and would like to get back there, potentially with fewer horrible feelings I'll be 38 by the first of the year.

Well, I never thought I'd even be a candidate for a thread like this. But with 18:03 as my last race, I guess 17:59 isn't far fetched.
Age: 41
Below 18: never
2021 Goals: 50mpw 'cause there's nothing else to do

It'd be fun to try in 2014, why not?
Age: 40
PR: 18:17
Never have done it yet, but then again I've only been running for 3 years.
2015 Goals and PRs:
5k - 17:59 (18:05); 10k - 35:59 (36:42); HM - 1:19:19 (1:19:59); FM - 2:49:59 (3:05:46)
Thought you had it figured out, huh? Me, too but it ain't quite that easy is it?!
Yeah, some of the basic differences are obvious. I did it with higher mileage and speedwork. I also got injured soon after and have come back from that injury with a much more sustainable approach to running. I've been able to PR or just about equal PRs from that level of fitness in all distances but the 5K. I haven't been within over a half minute near that time. It's annoying. I don't expect I'll be running 70 mile weeks so I'll have to figure it out in other ways.
Have a free weeknight? Want to meet up at the track near the Malden/Melrose line on Main Street for a weekly track workout?
Oh hell.
I managed a sub-18 once: 17:38 in June of 2012. Had a long layoff soon after that, haven't been anywhere close to that time since.
I'm 38, DOB in March.
I'm in for 2014. Just ran 18:55 PR last week. I'm 38, b-day in May.

PRs: 5k - (20:42) 3/9/2013 18:55 (9/28/13)
10k - (42:42) 3/23/2013 39:11 (10/26/13) course was short @ 6.0 mi :)
10 mi - (1:12:10) 4/6/2013
HM - (1:34:38) 4/27/2013
That's part of the puzzle. I'll send you a message.
Finally broke 18 minutes today coming in at 17:48. Might have been able to go a little faster but I was afraid of blowing up. Will try another 5k around Christmas to see if I can get under 17:40
Well, that was quick huskerrunner! Now keep it rolling into the new year.
As for me, I just ran a half that indicates about a 17:50 5K but I don't see myself taking a shot at it anytime soon and don't feel trained for that level of intensity. I've got long race in a couple weeks, then recovery, then probably an XC race in December, then a marathon in the first half of January, then recovery, then looking to actually train for a marathon. Despite all this, I can find a 5K any weekend if I wanted to...
