Mmmm Bop
Flavio - Isn't Maradona the 80s GOAT? I'm trying to think who the 90s GOAT would be. Maybe I'm having a brain fade but most other decades there are obvious contenders. I guess Zidane played a lot of his career in the 90s. I have a Dennis Bergkamp bias as an Arsenal fan. Oh, the original Ronaldo gets a mention I guess.
Maradona had the best left foot...and left hand in the game.
I loved watching the Arsenal/Man Utd games in the 90s...so much talent!

Flavio: Oops on the elevation adjustment. Hopefully no damage done and there’s a benefit back closer to sea.
Cal: It’s disappointing to hear that you’ve lost your native language so quickly. I’ve taken the hint, everyone is thinking it and only you are saying, will convert everything to laggard units forthwith. Plan for tomorrow is a run of 9 miles, 2 furlongs, 372 feet and 7 inches.
DW: IIRC you’ve already done a series of dietary eliminations that have seen some improvement but maybe there’s another culprit not yet discovered at the root of continued inflammation? I hope you get to the bottom of it or work around it with the meds. Some digestive issues that I was having disappeared when I ditched carbs.
Jhudak: Yes, sub 3 has been the goal since 2012 when I ran my second marathon in 3:23.
RP: Good to see the weeklies. Melbourne was always the marathon I was shooting for. I’m entered and training as if it will happen but toss a coin. Currently in lockdown #6.
Jmac: I have become less tolerant with age, of most things. Concrete helps. Good to see you posting weeklies, though they might be hard to translate and relate.
Steve: Hot Weather Complaining has infected this thread, your fault.
Rovatti: Literally LOL, earings!
GOAT/s: They are contemporaries at 39 and 36. Ken off, Eluid on road.
Smoke: I hope our native flora is not to blame or a part. Driving the west coast a while back I kept getting a whiff of home. Eucalypts everywhere. Those things need fire and fuel it like there is no tomorrow.

OMR - I agree, over time I should monitor it from time to time seeing as nearly everyone in the family has high blood pressure, including 2 younger siblings.
Mikkey - To be fair you guys did Argentina pretty good 4 years earlier in those rocky islands 😈
Marby - I don’t think Cal lost his language, we can still read his Russian accent in his posts. I still don’t believe he can’t read metric.
It's not like it's rocket science, it's a simple 1.6 conversion, 5 miles is 8km, 10 miles is 16km.
With paces it gets more tricky as you need to compute paces in seconds, but one should be fairly comfortable remembering "level paces":
3 min/km = 15 min 5k
3:12min/km = 16 min 5k
3:24 min/km = 17 min 5k
4 min/km = 20 min 5k
5 min/km = 25 min 5k
I mean, it seems so simple to me.
Going the other direction, I've learned what my PR paces are in the arcaic system so I can quickly compare too.

Marby wow. Lockdown number 6. My state is currently open with about a 17% positivity testing rate and the governor just says "get vaccinated. it's easy. It's just a sore arm. I don't want to have to do mandates" and mandated masks inside government buildings. No social distancing or reduced capacities or even closing of bars/gyms/restaurants/coffee shops/strip clubs/dance clubs/churches (he got sued and lost)/etc. when our positivity rate is higher than it was last year and he did all this. I think ONE race is planned/scheduled around October and the same orgainzation put one on earlier when the county was open to move around without masks. I'm not so sure it will be the same case this year.
smoke sucks. AQI didn't drop to under anything I'd want to run in until after dinner last night and by then I was tired from doing other stuff. Today it is supposed to be orange. I'd take heat and humidity over dangerous air. Running and training for a marathon isn't so important to me I need to justify running because "the data I'm choosing to look at says it is okay even though my eyeballs tell a different story." We shall see how long these California fires keep ruining my day.
Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

RP - Sounds much more sensible than how we handle it in New Zealand and Australia. Our health minister has already stated we will go into level 4 lockdown with ONE case of the delta variant. Level 4 lockdown means everywhere except arbitrary "essential" businesses are allowed to open. You can leave home to exercise (within 5km of home, max 2 hours) or do shopping or picking up essentials like medication. To really appreciate how utterly ridiculous this is, remember we are a set of islands about the size of the UK with a very sparse population. So you may ask why one island locks down if there's a single case in another island. Very good question. But unfortunately we are a nation of compliant sheep.
Marby - I was looking at the Melbourne half earlier this year but it's just too risky now. I've done it 3 times with 2 of them finishing inside the G. It's so inspiring in the last few km seeing the stadium in the distance. The William Barak Bridge is pretty brutal in the last km - I think the full doesn't include that though?
I'm currently planning a full marathon in April...so it's probably good that JMac is initiating the hot weather complaining because in January and February I think every run may have some weather whinging included (Christchurch gets pretty hot but peaks more at 35-38C (95-100F) rather than 43-45C (110-113F) like Melbourne - that is just brutal).

RP: At those rates authorities here would start welding people in their homes.
Steve: I’m not planning anything out of state in the next 6 months. I like the G finish but it sucks that they have to wait until after the Grand Final to achieve that. By October the weather has turned and we can get less than ideal conditions. There are no (decent size, fast) marathons mid-May to mid-September when practically every morning is perfect for running. The marathon course doesn’t go over that bridge, the toughest bit is a 2% hill in the gardens at about 36k/22mi that goes for 800m/0.5mi. Might have to consider something across the ditch for next year.
Flavio: It’s mainly the pace where online calculators are my friend. There are only four in memory. 6 = 3:45 6:50 = 4:15 7 = 4:20 8 = 5
Marby I ran it in 2014 and unfortunately couldn't finish in the stadium. The temperature was really good though. I remember shivering onthe startline in a singlet but if you weren't finished in under 4 hours it could be 20c +

Somewhere in between is about right "
Yep, 2014 was the year I did it that finished outside. In 2013 the weather turned freezing just after the end of the half. Each year I did it it was perfect cool conditions. I’ve heard of some years when it’s been 35C maybe during the race - 2009 I think, and another one recently. Carnage up St Kilda Road
Not sure about 2009, ran 2016 & 2018 and both got to around 22C/72F. That's bad enough but apparently it was 29C/84F in 1979.

On the toenail issue, it's only an issue in the summer AND if I'm marathon training. This is pretty common as far as I understand due to the swelling of your feet that occurs, plus all of the friction caused by sweat. My shoes after a run in the summer, because I tend to run at hotter times of day, are soaked as if I went running in the rain and usually aren't fully dried out 24 hours later. I have at least a thumb's width between the end of my toes and the end of the shoe while standing, which I thought was the standard for shoe sizing.
I guess in theory I could have a half bigger size shoe for summer running, and then go back to my usual size in the winter, but that seems pretty weird. I know for a fact half sized up in the winter will not work.
KM Conversion - I struggle with it too. It's easier to go from miles to KM imo rather than the opposite since you're multiplying by 0.6. Much harder to divide by 0.6. I do tend to think about it like Flavio though, but it's time consuming "okay, 3:40 is a...18:20 pace, which sounds pretty close to 5:50ish per mile, right?"
Hot Weather Complaining - although I do love that, this is more of a legit training question I was posing since I haven't been able to get through my runs properly. Even today, I had to stop 4 times for water on a 1:20 easy run, more than I usually do. Even with that, my chest felt off and I was definitely a bit lightheaded. I pushed through it because I didn't want to bail on another easy run, but it's been a big issue for me.
I normally hate the end of summer as I know it means shorter days and colder weather, but marathon training brightens things up significantly. I cannot wait to be running in even 65 degree weather again.

So there’s an issue about posting in miles or km? Unbelievable!
Tuesday felt good, the tail end of the hills were tough.9k @ 4:14/6:506 x 300m hills (5% grade, 1:18 sec)
Thursday it was a struggle to get moving but got better the longer it went.3k @ 4:14/6:50 (2 min jog)2x2k @ 4:05/6:35 (2 min jog)
4x1k @ 3:55/6:20 (1 min jog)Sunday felt like a complete fail while it was happening but I guess it's not catastrophic. It seemed like the wind was against me at every turn and I didn't have the will power to push. Was meant to be 14k but made a call mid run to do it as 2x7k with a 1k jog. Average 4:21/7:00
Marby: Nice week, I think I would be fatigued by the third workout with just one recovery day between each.
My week was less than stellar, but I managed to get the three most important runs in:
S: Rest
M: 8.2M @ 7:54 w/12 x 1min @ >5K effort (6:15/mile average)
T: 8.75M @ 7:59
W: Off (got the shingles vaccine round 2 in the morning, and went to bed with the chills that evening)
T: 9.75M @ 7:36 w/20min tempo run (6:45/mile)
F: Off (gut issues...trying to make a few dietary changes, and suffering the consequences, haha)
S: 16M @ 8:11
Total: 42.7M.
Ok, my first message was eaten by a goblin, I think... Second try - here we come.
Marby - good week even if you think the Sunday's workout was a fail - all I see is a good distance and very good pace. For me, personally, it was always a challenge to run something like MP or faster within a long run.
OMR - good week too - with pretty fast paces. Shingles? Two doses? Why two? Did you have it before? I had it in 2002 and only took few pills to cure.
Miles to Kms conversion - my approach to it is easy - I do not do that (I know - I am a lazy pig). I see mins/kms and I just pass. Is it wrong? I do not know - I just pass. If the majority of the runners here were kilometers guys, I would probably change my habits, but so far, the majority of the runners here talk miles.
My week was pretty good. Biggest mileage so far. Also, my HR to pace numbers are improving too - pretty cool.

Marby: That's a great week, and no big deal in my opinion to break the MP block into two 7km sections. I could also see how you might be a bit tired at the end of the week with two big workouts already in your legs.
OMR: Nice job getting in the workouts and long run despite the obstacles.
Cal: Impressive week! Glad to hear the HR/pace is moving in the right direction. I saw for your long run today, the weather line said "Smoke"; was it bad? I guess not too bad since you managed 21 miles.
In 8 weeks time it will be a busy weekend, so many races. Marby, Flavio, Cal and myself are all running, plus a lot of people I know (not on here) are running either Boston, Chicago, or Hartford. Will be fun to track everyone!
This week the heat/humidity was so bad I wimped out and did no workout mid-week. Just easy miles, sweating countless gallons... This morning was better so I put 2 x 4 mi in my LR, should have been at MP but a bit too quick the first 4 mostly due to downhill parts. This week, I need to do a workout, even though the weather will be bad again by Wednesday.
