1 mile road race shoe preference? (Read 79 times)

mjhaston

I have the Nike Streakfly and Vaporfly 2.  I think I'm going to stick with the Vaporfly 2 for 5K's and above, even though the Streakfly says 5K/10K right on them!  Does anyone own both and have an opinion on which to wear for a 1 mile road race?

I read one review that said even though you're adding 1 oz by going with the Vaporfly 2, the advantage of the carbon plate is worth it.  I wear the Streakfly for track interval work and kind of dig them.

    Opinions?

    TIA.

    Mike

Mike - wear the shoes you feel most comfortable with at that pace. Personally, I’d test them both by running, say, a half mile stretch on the road at your 1 mile effort and comparing the outcome.

        Thanks @ViBe71

I'll introduce myself next time I see you at a race.  I just caught "Bucks County" in your signature and realized I'm your Strava stalker Smile  You're one of the local guys I've been admiring since I got back into running last year.  I introduced myself to Keith at the Be Kind 5K as a "very frustrated 58 year old runner"!

Mike - yes, that's right, we follow each other on Strava Smile

I'll see you this Saturday at a 5K race (I'm not racing it, just running with my daughter.)

You are too kind . Keith is a really nice guy, I've met him at that race too.

And don't be frustrated - you are getting there!

I couldn't decide which shoes that I own to wear for a road mile, so I did some 400m comparison runs at mile pace and checked the stats on my watch for HR, cadence, and power.

I was surprised with the results, thinking some stiff plated lightweight racers I had would be best (Skechers Speed Freek) but found them lacking behind GoMeb-6 and NB RC Elite-2. I went with the RC Elites.

That's my suggestion, do a few test runs at mile pace in each pair you're considering; trying to make the conditions of each test equal (surface, weather, amount of warmup, recovery from previous day, etc). I think you're right, at some point the energy return of the extra foam guided by the plate will be "faster" despite adding weight, but I'm not sure if it will be a race as short as a mile. It depends on how long it takes you to run a mile.

Awesome info.  Vitaly told me to do a personal comparison as well.  I think I'll bring both pairs to tomorrows interval workout on a synthetic track.  That's probably odd to say in 2023, but my usual interval track is a cinder track 0.7 miles away Smile  I usually run my intervals in the Streakfly.

Surly Bill, it probably won't matter much.  I'm hoping to be right around 6:00, but we're always looking for a little edge.  I'm running two 1 mile races in the next couple of weeks.  Vitaly is in both races.  One a straight mile down Main Street, so he'll be far ahead.  It's the next that is on a track that I need to worry about him lapping me on!

                Thank you.

Surly Bill - I just read your profile blurp and talking about cinder tracks.... I saw this:  "Dad was a 4:07 miler in college around 1950."

                  That's super impressive!

Mike - no worries, to lap you I'll have to run a sub 4:30 mile which is not happening Smile

I ended up running in the Nike Vaporfly 2.  They worked out, as I ran the time I was shooting for.  I have another mile on the track coming up that I may think about the Streakflys again, if not just for a test.  Thanks for the advice.
