Refurbished Hip
Hoping for good news from your surgeon! I think I am going to cancel my last appt with my surgeon in a few weeks. I don't really see a point to going.
You know what I am amazed at? I no longer click! My hip is so quiet. It's weird.
Running is dumb.

That's great! You're still seeing PT right?
Every once and a while I get a pop, but nothing like pre-op. My other hip is a popping, cracking mess though lol
Yes, I actually am going to see my PT this afternoon. Still on the every other week plan. I am *really* hoping to be bumped down to once a month today.
Are you still having pain on the "good" side? So far so good for me. Of course, I keep having these thoughts that as soon as I start actually running again, ol' righty is going to go to shit.
I am - well, not so much "pain" but very clunky and stiff. It doesn't stop me from doing anything I'm currently doing, but I do wonder what will happen in the near future.
I will be 8 weeks post op tomorrow! So far (can you hear me knocking on wood!) not a single set back! I can now walk nearly 2 miles and I rode my bike for the second time today. Went six easy miles and no pain! My OS and PT are both conservative which seems to be working for me. I follow all of their instructions to a T! I appreciate hearing everyone's positive stories. You have all been so encouraging and made this slow process feel hopeful! I'm so glad I found this forum! Thank you!
Great news, Kathy! Thanks for checking in and letting us know how you're doing.
My PT appointment was relatively uneventful. We spent a lot of time on ROM stuff - I am still experiencing tightness in my joint. She scheduled me to come back in 3 weeks to do my running eval -- which is a video analysis type thing. That signified the end of my PT last year, but I am not sure if it will this time or not.
Kathy - wow, 8 weeks already! Sounds like you're doing awesome
Mandy - had my visit with the PA today and he said that they are finding that returning to running at 4 months is working out better than returning earlier (well, unless you are dallison who is some sort of super human lol) I didn't have the heart to tell him that the smart ladies on the internet already figured that out :P
If I log stalk Dallison, I see that he did a 10 mile run over the weekend! Wow!
I had a little bit of groin pain toward the end of my run on Monday...thought it was just the adductor, but then tonight I started having some groin pain while just normal hiking. Sigh. Looks like I'm on running hiatus and back to the bike for at least a few days.
Mandy, so sorry for your set back I hope you recover fast! We all like fast!!
After 8 1/2 weeks off recovering, I went back to work Tuesday. I teach Kindergarten special ed. Tuesday was classroom set up. OMG!!!! After spending most of the summer on the couch, 9 hours of work EXHAUSTED me! I had students today and feel like I ran a marathon. No real pain, hip feels great, just exhausted! Feet hurt, calves hurt, quads hurt. I put my fit bit back on just to see what I was doing. Over 13,000 steps each day. I had just gotten up to a two mile walk with a nice rest on an ice pack after .Kind of an extreme change? How long did it take everyone to get their endurance back once they went to work? Unfortunately I'm in a job that makes it hard to "take it easy"
Damn, Mandy. But not totally unheard of, so just rest up and get back at it.
I tried biking again - still no go, but better. Slowly but surely. Loving the elliptigo though! I start more PT on Monday, as well, and I'm looking forward to it.
Kathy - It was probably right around the 8 week mark where I started to not have problems with fatigue, but I wasn't trying to chase kids!
I've been reading through this thread throughout the day and am currently on page 22 but I had to post and introduce myself. I'm a 25yr old guy and I love to workout with weights but I don't run. I'm posting here because in my google searches nothing has been as comprehensive and great a resource as this thread, so keep up the great work!
So to get down to details: I injured my right hip two months ago. I was doing back squats for the first time in a good six months and was doing light weigh for me at 85lbs for three sets of five reps. The day after is when the pain started and it was so bad it hurt just to walk, sitting was a huge challenge as well. I saw a physical therapist a week later and she said it was greater trochanteric pain and gave me some stretches and strengthening exercises to do and sent me on my way. I've been doing them on and off but whenever I do them I get intense soreness in my right hip, and not the good kind of soreness; it lasts for 2 days and I can't do any of the stuff she gave me to do. When I went for a follow-up two weeks ago she said to try easing back into lower body stuff, so last Monday (7 weeks post injury date) I tried bodyweight squats and lunges and felt fine during the workout but the entire week afterward I was in pain.
Got an MRI done last Wednesday and it said that I have extensive detached bilateral posterosuperior acetabular labrel tears, along with bone marrow edema along the tensile surface of the right femoral head-neck junction, compatible with osseous stress response (no discrete fracture line). To me it doesn't sound good but I'm not sure, I'm seeing an orthopedic doctor who specializes in hips at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia next Wednesday. This sounds like I'll need surgery since even today, a week after testing my hip, it still bothers me and I can "feel" it (although not painful not). I'm scared about getting surgery and hate being injured all the time as this is one of a number of injuries I've accumulated over the years, but I hate not being able to do what I love, which is squats, deadlifts, biking, etc. Has anyone's MRI said something similar to mine? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Welcome! Sorry to hear you've been having such trouble though.
So, posteriosuperior means towards the back and towards the top. Typical labrum tears are anteriorsuperior - or towards the front - so you are unique in that way! I don't know how accessible posterior tears are - the front is accessible via arthroscopy. The rest of it sounds like bone bruising or some sort of trauma to the bone, but not a stress fracture. (I'm not a doctor though so I could be totally off)

Who are you seeing? I would definitely want to be sure to see a hip specialist, as it doesn't sound like a run of the mill labrum tear.

Thanks for the explanation! That would explain why I feel my pain in my butt and outside of my right hip and not in the groin region where most people here have reported that they do. I am seeing Dr. Javad Parvizi: http://www.jefferson.edu/university/biomedical_sciences/faculty/parvizi.html. Seems like a legit guy, although if not then I'll go wherever necessary since you say this is not a usual tear.
I've not heard of him but he does seem to have some good experience. There are some others in the Philly area that people are always talking about if you need a second opinion! I think Vincera Institute has a few hip guys.
I never even came across the Vincera Institute in my searching so far, thanks for making me aware of them! I'll call them tomorrow and see if I can get a second opinion as surgery is not something I want to rush into blindly, although the amount that my hip is bugging me is pretty frustrating and prompting me to get the surgery done and over with.
