Awesome snow run too, I bet that would be super good for leg strength.  We're going up to Sun Peaks. BC, for a couple of weeks at the end of January so I'm looking forward to running in totally different conditions then, although normally I just stick to the roadside.

nice!  Look up snow shoe running - maybe you can rent some up there and try them out!

      RANT OF THE DAY

In New Zealand we have a 15% sales tax (we call it GST - goods and services tax) on anything you buy from a shop or an NZ online retailer.

Anything bought from overseas websites that got sent to you in NZ used to be exempt from this tax, unless it was over a $400 threshold, i.e. I never paid GST on any running shoes because I try to score most of them cheaply on sale from Running Warehouse Australia (running shoes are stupidly expensive in NZ).

Our evil government has now said that 15% GST applies to everything as of December 1, whether it was purchased from an overseas retailer and shipped to NZ (e.g. Amazon.com or runningwarehouse.com.au), or whether it was purchased in NZ.

I have concluded that the government is out to get me as they are trying to make my running habit less affordable (and profit off it in the process).

They're most certainly out to get you Mark - you have a salary and are not (I don't think) in any of the preferred victim groups.

I find Catch of the Day (might just be called "Catch" now) is pretty good.  But I stocked up when in the States earlier this year (basically half price) and might get some more in Australia in a couple of weeks (up to 50% off).

As a few have commented on my doubles. It is part of the plan to minimize wear and to have 1 workout being a fast long run (Saturday) since I need to sustain a 6:18 pace for the Marathon next summer. Typically my other workout is Tuesdays.  It is also a partial factor of being a good husband and dad. My wife is pregnant with our second (due 5 days before my june marathon...oops) so to be helpful I don't run between 6 am and 7 pm when my son is awake, and I get up with him in the night if need be. So I try to be in bed at 8:30 pm or so and up at 4 or 4:30 am. As a result running a 9 and 4 works better from a staying healthy perspective and life style than running a 13 miler 4 days a week. I also work 50-60 hours a week between my 2 jobs (govt programs for homeless and low income housing and 2nd job in homes shelter on sundays)

Kimba - link looks broken. My only snow running lately has been icy sidewalks in Manhattan and then completely snow packed sidewalks in Montreal. Both were complete disasters, but I hate the treadmill so much I'll do almost anything to avoid it.

Mark - I think the logic sort of makes sense tbh, like why would you pay a tax if it was shipped to a NZ store and then you bought it vs. you cutting out the middleman? Frustrating though. The USA has something similar where you don't have to pay sales tax for certain states if that business does not have a "physical" presence in your state.

Jmac- pretty sure this is now closed. I think all retailers have to collect tax now or the IRS is coming for you. The exception is non physical objects...digital photos, pdfs, etc.

I think apple or amazon or someone lost a court case a year ago or so

DPS - so I looked it up. States can now require it, but they aren't forced to collect it. Put another way, some states used to charge tax even if you didn't have a physical location, which SCOTUS recently ruled is legal. So now states are rushing to get it on their books if they don't, but not all states have it. Apparently the recent decision overturned a 1992 decision saying you needed a physical presence.

Mark - agreed, import taxes are super annoying. I once bought 2 shoes from runningwarehouse US worth $200. Shipping was $57. I paid $257 in import fees, making each shoe cost $257 in the end. That was the last time I tried to do this.

Now I wait for vacation trips abroad.

Oklahoma did this recently. Now everything I buy online I get charged Oklahoma sales tax for, even if there's no physical presence in OK.

The logic makes sense, I'm just annoyed I'm going to have to pay more for shoes.

The other argument that got made was that it levels the playing field for NZ-based retailers... who charge stupidly high prices generally anyway - and you watch as they put their prices up by 5% or so (but less than 15%).

Brewing - got it, I like cats mostly because they don't charge me. With dogs I never know if they just wanna smell my legs or tear them apart.

That said, I'm unable to nurture anything. When my wife bought some plants last year the first thing I said is that I would absolutely not help

Piwi - in your absence I'm on Strava spewing juvenile jokes about man boobs, or one emoticon a time conversations. Someone has to carry that burden.

DPS - that's a lot of juggling, much respect. Just how you survive working 60 hours during week days is mind boggling. I work 40 and it already seems way too much.

Jmac - Very enlightening discussion about post workout replenishments on Strava. Please stop sabotaging yourself running on ice rinks 4 days out from the big day.

me - I have a sore throat again, had to skip strength training this afternoon. Hopefully it's gone by tomorrow.
