RIP Milkman

Serious question, not a troll post. Are any other guys in here going to be racing Boston with freshly shaven legs?

As someone who shaves her legs regularly, but not always, I have never noted any difference in how I race one way or the other.

I think cyclists do it because it makes it easier to treat road rash, not for performance benefits.  Swimmers do it and feel benefit, but water resistance is different from air.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

I don’t do it really for aerodynamics, though there is a marginal gain from having shaven legs. You just feel faster and i find I have less chafing. Don’t knock it to you try it.

I get it from a psychological standpoint of feeling fast or whatever but, no, no shaving for me. I will have a new haircut, natch.

Upcoming; 14th Sep Scottish veterans XC trials, 289th Sep Great Scottish Run 1/2, 12th October TAMA half marathon, 27th October Leeds Abbey dash 10k

Ah, I see you posted at the same time I was replying. I know a couple of cyclist and tri-curious types who go in for this.

I will also be getting a “speed cut”

What if it's going to be in the 30s for race day? Then I'd want the long hair.

In swimming it’s a night and day difference.  Running?  I’m sure your not getting much from it but hell give it a shot.

This reminded me of "Inside a Marathon", where Scott Fauble talks about shaving his legs so the veins are more visible; he basically does it for vanity. But elites generally seem to do it, either for aerodynamics, better cooling, or other reasons.

If you've been laying off the TV and music while on a treadmill you should be mentally tough enough to handle that. (joke)

I get what your saying though. I plan to shave my legs for the 15k next weekend and reshave for Boston. If Boston is going to be too cold I'll probably put some vasoline on my legs

Hey there's water in air! The difference in coefficient of drag of your legs with hair and w/o hair is minimal, but over a marathon could actually be a few seconds. That's the difference between qualifying and not qualifying for some people

I'm the opposite - my hair does not get cut until after the marathon, if I'm due (too worried about picking up a head cold at the salon).  I don't color my hair within a week either, since I sometimes get a mild allergic reaction to the dye.

As for shaving nope - not fast enough to worry about that! I do shave my head just about weekly, but that's because I already lost my hair Wink

So now I will know why I'll have 5-10 folks dragging behind me in about 3 weeks!  Definitely wore me down constantly trying to shield my buddy from some strong wind gusts last year.  Lets hope we don't have to worry to much about a headwind this year!

I've recovered very well from the half and even put in a workout last night. It does make me wonder if a 3 week taper is too much for me, given I was able to run well in the half with a 17 and 21 mile run within 7 days of it, and that I've recovered enough from the race to start doing workouts again. Last year, after getting sick in my final week, I only went with a 2 week taper and it worked. Something to think about for me.

Of course, entering taper time means only one thing for me: what injury will appear this year??? Last year, it was metatarsalgia with 10 days to go, and two years ago it was the phantom stress fracture a doctor diagnosed me with 2 days before the race.

For me a 3 week taper is too long and would rather go with a steeper 10 day taper...maybe you should do that, which means less questions about phantom injuries!

Shaved legs?  If that gives you a mental boost then go for it!

                              RIP Milkman

Thanks Mikkey. I think I'm only going to cut out 10% next week instead of the normal 20%. Then, I'll down to 70-75% instead of the usual 60%. After that, I'll go into a sharp taper in the final week. I think that will work best for me.
