2019 Sub 3 hour marathon thread (Read 680 times)

I agree about the Maurten gels; I ordered a box and tried them on my LR last weekend and really liked them. None of the sticky/syrupy mess of GUs and go down really easily. I'll probably carry 4 of these for my race as well.

This guy is my hero, I can feel how fun it would be to finish like that.

Anyway, back to prodding my knee/toe/sternum etc and thinking 'does that feel weird?'

How you feeling for your 15k MMC?

Upcoming; 14th Sep Scottish veterans XC trials, 289th Sep Great Scottish Run 1/2, 12th October TAMA half marathon, 27th October Leeds Abbey dash 10k

Had that same issue with my hip last night and immediately said to myself "stop it"

Holy crap what a way to hammer those last 5-6 miles!!  That is something I have never even remotely been close to doing, but my guess is he was in much better shape than even this overall time shows.  The uphill's, mile 21 (heartbreak hill), and even 25 were just nuts!  Keep in mind that 2015 had a subtle, but pesky headwind as well.

And check out his pace in those first few miles ...  that is how you do it!

MMC - that looks like a very tough 15K course, especially by my flat standards.  Should be exactly what you need as a Boston tune-up though.

I definitely think that guy was in better shape than he thought. He ran a 2:33 at NYC last year, probably didn't even know how to pace it when he ran Boston a few years ago.

MMC - that course does look challenging, but as Weather said, it's a perfect course to practice for Boston. Good luck to you and Fin this weekend!

Impulse bought a Garmin Forerunner 235 yesterday, so I decided to get on Strava https://www.strava.com/athletes/cishx

Welcome to Strava! You'll find a way to follow us all through our weekly log Strava links, although when you see a bunch of random requests, you'll know it's us too.

Confession - if I don't know who the person is (and regularly encountering them on this forum does count as "know" for my purposes), then I don't accept the Strava.

So... if you're a regular participant on Running Ahead and have sent me a follow that I've ignored, it's likely because I didn't know it was you.  So just shoot me a message here, and I'll confirm you on Strava.

BTW, I'm assuming it's not hard to figure out my handle on Strava… Big grin

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

JT - I know all the focus has been on the Boston runners, but no more! You've been too quiet about your own goals, how you're feeling, etc. Open up about this cycle!

MMC - that does look to be a fairly tricky course. Still, nobody ever asks you your 15k PR so just race it for training.

Hey thanks for asking JMac! The goal is still sub 2:50 for me. I'm not sure I'm in significantly better shape than I was last October when I ran my PR, but a couple of workouts this cycle have indicated might be a bit better. Plus, the Athens course is very flat, which for me should be a big advantage as I suck on hills. Add in the VF magic and hopefully it is enough for 2-3 minutes faster. As you guys have been discussing, however, the weather will be the big wild card. My last 2 marathons have been soakers; rain from start to finish; hoping for a dry one but I guess above all I want the temp to be cool, wet or dry.

I've been worried all week about catching my wife's cold, but so far so good, and she is way better today.

I'm doing a 10k tomorrow which will be BTTW and my last really hard workout till race day.

Good luck MMC (that is a tough course indeed) and Fin this weekend!
