Mother of Cats

I agree that the Boston weather makes it generally difficult to try and keep it as an A+ goal race, but it also seems like more and more people keep holding out for absolute perfect conditions. I think I've mentioned this before, but several people here in Houston go to CIM each year citing better weather. Houston can get crap weather every once in a while, but it is generally good (mid to upper 50s) to perfect (low 40s). If you get it stuck in your head that you will only do well when its low 40s, dry and no wind, this will end up being a very disappointing hobby for you.

I absolutely agree with this.  At the same time, I think there are races that are better and worse risks for weather.  If you target Chicago or Grandma's, you know that you run the risk of a warm day.   I've always thought of Houston as being slightly risky for us northerners, since we're training in much cooler weather.  58-59 degrees with high humidity can actually drain something out of someone over the course of a full marathon if you're jumping into that weather straight from the 20s and teens.

It's also hard to run well at Boston for reasons outside of the weather - not just the course but also the entire athlete's village experience really drains one.  Holding weather aside, I put Boston in the same category as New York and Marine Corps - if a time is of the utmost importance to you, then you should probably pick another race.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

        That's some crappy crap.

        Upcoming races: Boston

Andres, totally agree. Unfortunately this sport is fixated on times - to my mind race times are only broadly comparable between events and even between the same event on different years. Marathon running is almost like cross country, just race the course and day and competition that you're faced with.

Darkwave - sorry about the short course  that is complete ass. I've had 3k and half marathon PR's knocked out by that in the past. It's just not good enough from organisers.

Upcoming; 14th Sep Scottish veterans XC trials, 289th Sep Great Scottish Run 1/2, 12th October TAMA half marathon, 27th October Leeds Abbey dash 10k

Ugh sorry Andres and DW. I had a bad feeling when I saw that Letsrun thread, was just hoping it was “short” because of a hairpin turn instead of a misplaced cone.

Boston - agreed with everyone. I only know the NYC experience so I’m excited to run CIM this fall to see what it’s like not to have to deal with horrible logistics to run a race.

MMC - no idea when I’m going, wouldn’t count on a meetup from me.

My flight is supposed to arrive around 3:45 so I'll either be hitting the expo right afterwards or first thing Sunday.

Darkwave & Andres: that sucks. I would expect better from a race that big!

Unfortunate on Cherry Blossom.  Real shame when that happens.

So between the two likely forecasts for Boston, what are people hoping for?  Colder rain and small headwind, or warmer temperatures, more favorable winds, and possibly less rain?  For me it would normally be a no-brainer to avoid the 60s at all cost, but the time prerace changes the equations a bit in my head.

JT - Best of luck tomorrow, your training has been great this cycle. 👍

Andres/DW - Damn that would really piss me off. 👎

                    Mother of Cats

I'm disappointed in the race.  Surprisingly not that upset with losing my PR - in part because I was so pissed off about the 63:01.  And I have Broad Street next month, where they'e used the same course for a long time.

But, I really expected better from Cherry Blossom.  Misplacing a cone is a very local race mistake.  Good on them for conceding the error and paying out time bonuses anyway.

Turns out I'm now not going to Boston until tomorrow so I'll be at the Expo then

Mikkey: Congrats on another outstanding PB in the 5k! You're becoming a specialist in that event!

Good luck to all the Bostoners in case I don't get to write it tomorrow!

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I've arrived in Athens and picked up my bib, #57. The weather looked great until Tuesday, then shifted dramatically. Now it looks like rain for the whole race, and warmer than I'd like (56 start, 65 finish). But I guess the rain will help to cool off a bit.

Went and watched the Newport marathon, half & 5k race this morning. MMC, you're pretty local, put in some decent training this year then drive down and win this thing! Won in 2:37 today, half and 5k were even softer.

Quick drop by to wish JTReeves good luck!!! - I'm traveling to the airport to fly home.  Ran 18:5x this morning - my Garmin said 18:53, but I didn't slap it until well after the second mat, so I'm hoping chip time is faster.  They only have my gun time right now - 18:58 which was good enough for third female master.
