I've got a fever...
The same album gave us "Silly Love Songs". He has taken a lot of crap for that one over the years.
Give that song a listen, but ignore the lyrics and focus on the bass. Killer bassline -- there's a reason why Macca is considered one of the most influential rock bassists of all time. And he plays bass while he sings, which is much harder than it looks.
On your deathbed, you won't wish that you'd spent more time at the office. But you will wish that you'd spent more time running. Because if you had, you wouldn't be on your deathbed.
Agreed. He gets a pass on the lyrics.
Sick of dumb lyrics, here's some good ones:
Strangers passing in the streetBy chance two separate glances meetAnd I am you and what I see is meAnd do I take you by the handAnd lead you through the landAnd help me understand the best I can?
Mr Matt M,
I believe someone already referenced the fake profundity of Springsteen lyrics, and mentioned this exact song.
You can pretty much get the same kind of nonsense from any song off his first 2 albums.
However I am a big fan of early Springsteen (I think he jumped the shark around The River). I am not sure he was trying to be deep, I think more a combination of stream-of-consciousness and inside jokes between him & his buddies.
Dave
Macca. Heh. That is new to me. Learned something.

Indeed. Thread half life is achieved once posts start duplicating.
This really *is* a dumb lyric... courtesy of Sade / Smooth Operator...
"Coast to coast, L.A. to Chicago"
MTA: Eh, so what if I don't care enough to read what's already been posted?
be curious; not judgmental
Also in the category of geography fails - from Journey/Don't Stop Beliving: "born and raised in South Detroit".
There is no town or neighborhood called South Detroit. South of Detroit is the Detroit River and Windsor, Ontario.
Those of you who have run the Detroit Marathon have experienced this first hand....
Not dead. Yet.
Just noticed this thread. This is the song that makes me cringe when I hear it on the radio. Luckily not so often any more.
Closing Time
~~~~~~~~~~
Open all the doors and let you out into the worldTurn all of the lights on over every boy and every girlOne last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beerYou don't have to go home but you can't stay here
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from <========= OUCHThis room won't be open till your brothers or your sisters comeSo gather up your jackets, move it to the exitsI hope you have found a friendEvery new beginning comes from some other beginning's end
Not only is it plain, obvious and idiotic, but they also made up new grammar rules in a few places.
How can we know our limits if we don't test them?
Speaking of weird geography... Folsom Prison Blues (which has EXCELLENT lyrics) has always puzzled me.
He's stuck in Folsom Prison... which is in Folsom, CA. And why, during CIM, I could NOT get that song out of my head.
But he hears a train. And it's heading "on down to San Antone".
Ok, hmmm. Turns out, there is a San Antonio, CA... and it is marginally south of Folsom, although really it is more west. But "San Antone" always meant the big San Antonio to me. The one in Texas where I lived for awhile. Remember the Alamo. Lots of Air Force bases there, and Mr Cash was in the Air Force.
But it is hard to figure that the train through Folsom is headed "down to" San Antonio TX. Which is 1800 miles away.
Sometimes I think too hard.
Personally, I believe this to be one of the worst songs of all time...
We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Say you don't know me or recognize my face Say you don't care who goes to that kind of place Knee deep in the hoopla sinking in your fight Too many runaways eating up the night Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Chorus: We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Someone always playing corporation games Who cares they're always changing corporation names We just want to dance here someone stole the stage They call us irresponsible write us off the page Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Built this city, we built this city on rock and roll It's just another Sunday, in a tired old street Police have got the choke hold, oh then we just lost the beat Who counts the money underneath the bar Who rides the wrecking ball in to our rock guitars Don't tell us you need us, 'cos we're the ship of fools Looking for America, coming through your schools (I'm looking out over that Golden Gate bridge Out on another gorgeous sunny Saturday, not seein' that bumper to bumper traffic) Don't you remember ('member)('member) (It's your favorite radio station, in your favorite radio city The city by the bay, the city that rocks, the city that never sleeps) Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio, don't you remember We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll We built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Built this city, we built this city on rock and roll Built this city, we built this city on rock and roll
Back then, one would have taken the Sacramento Daylight to Los Angeles and connected with the Sunset Limited (first class) or Argonaut (coach class) with service to New Orleans (via San Antonio)...
I could write 'em out but what's the point:
ANY Roxette song.
I know, really it's not fair to pick on Swedes droppin' English.
Come all you no-hopers, you jokers and roguesWe're on the road to nowhere, let's find out where it goes
