Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2018 (Read 704 times)

Haha evening guys, I’m just off to the gym.

Saw that 30k split, he has done enough marathons now that I reckon that 2:45 is definitely on the cards and he’d have to have a major blow up not to hit sub-2:50.

Looks like the weather turned out perfect so I’ll take credit for that haha.

Wow, exciting races for the pros as well. The men’s finish was unreal, and Keitany completely blew apart the women’s field. Flanagan finished 3rd after a strong finish and 30 seconds faster time than last year!

And an ever so slight slowdown for JMac towards the end. 2:45 will be hard but he should be very close to 2:46! Really strong racing JMac!

Yeah I'd say pretty comfortably.  There are some fast runners over on the sub-3 forum but on this thread it's JMac first, daylight second when it comes to FMs.

It was a pretty good week until Saturday...nice cool running conditions, legs felt great and started hitting some decent pace.  On Saturday I planned to run 120 mins.  At the 1 hour mark I felt a slight niggle which started in the bottom of my foot, shot up through my calf all the way up to my hammy.  It was quite painful for about 30 seconds, and for the next 40 mins I had a slight discomfort in my calf but nothing that felt too serious.  It suddenly got worse and I stopped straight away.  I've been icing and rolling and it feels pretty sore (could be from the rolling though).  I had planned an easy 60 mins tonight to mini-taper into the 5km race on Wednesday.  I'll try an easy run just to check but it feels like a week or 2 rest based on previous experience, which will be very disappointing given my current fitness levels and the fact I have a 5km race and a half coming up.  It's been a common theme this year, I start to get to peak then my body lets me down.

Saturday was a tough run for other reasons too...the forecast was for rain and 20 degrees but instead it was 30 degrees and severe gale force winds which I death marched into from the 1 hour mark.  Weather like that is my nightmare and if I'd known how off base the forecast was I may have run in the park and would have taken in some fluids.

                          Mark Nice Week

What an awesome time by Jmac Congrats!!

another consistant week for me with only 5 weeks remaining I logged about 65 miles second highest on record for me.

I have a couple of days off this week so I will try and and log 1 more "high mileage" week this coming week with a lot of easy runs.

Corey nice job that is a really solid week.

Steve my hammy/calf issue seems to go together as well. Im so mentally motivated that I have to try and run until I feel the discomfort kick in.

I nearly had it sorted but then ran 2 big hill days in a row.

Mark forgot to say how balanced your week was with a rest day and strength day, you still hit 86kms on 5 days running.

Steve - nice week but bummer about the injury.  The weather sounds like it was sh!te, I have to deal with wind a lot but fortunately never the wind/temperature combo like that.

Corey - nice week and good volume there.

Piwi - yeah my long run yesterday was pretty slow, that was one of my bigger weeks this year and although there was only really one substantial workout in there, it was still a lot of volume for a post-race week.  But I'll look for something similar again this week, trying to get a bit of meaningful volume in the legs before Omaha and I don't want to overcook the following week with the 5km race coming up too.

                              RIP Milkman

Thanks everyone for the tracking and support! I wrote my full race report over in sub 3 if you want to hear about how miserable the last 8 miles were. Relevant for this forum, I forgot how different marathon pain is vs. shorter pain. It's just this complete lack of power that takes over you where your muscles have nothing left to give. You don't really red line like you do in shorter races, but it was quite the mental test to keep trying when you have nothing left to give with 8 miles left.

The best part of marathon training is the taper plus the 2 weeks or so after. It's quite a mental break from running 70 MPW with soul crushing workouts. A few days off now for me to recover as my quads are completely shot, but I'll be back out there doing very easy/short mileage soon enough. For this thread I plan on getting some good 5ks/10ks in during my Boston cycle, plus the NYC Half in March as a big fitness test, so I'm not going anywhere!
